This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Austin, TX or Warren, MI three times per week, at minimum. The Role GM Defense is seeking an SAP Plant Operations & Materials Lead to join the GMD SAP product management team. This role is the plant-facing SAP business systems owner for GMD assembly plant(s), with primary focus on material management capabilities and processes. The position exists because the plant is scaling production and SAP usage and preparing for SAP Quality Management (QM), Warehouse Management (WM/EWM), and Digital Manufacturing Cloud (DMC) over the next 18-24 months. GMD needs a dedicated business lead who can both stabilize current execution and lead the plant through upcoming deployments.
The SAP Plant Operations & Materials Lead:
Serves as the remote SAP-facing plant process / business systems lead for materials management and plant operations. Provides hands-on plant support, regularly working with supervisors, materials, receiving, and shipping personnel on the floor. Raises process maturity in receiving, inventory accuracy, material flow, shipping, and engineering change management, driving standard work and data discipline. Owns or co-owns SAP process training and standard work for plant users. Acts as the business-side deployment and adoption lead for future QM, WM/EWM, and selected DMC capabilities that impact plant execution. Complements the Inventory Management / PTP & Engineering Change lead by absorbing plant-facing execution, stabilization, and data discipline responsibilities, and supports the Purchasing & Logistics lead where inbound material flow, ASNs, and receiving intersect purchasing and logistics. What You'll Do Plant SAP Process Ownership & Execution Act as primary business owner for SAP processes Lead day-to-day issue triage and stabilization for plant SAP execution Define, document, and support standard work for plant SAP processes Training, Standard Work, and Adoption Own or co-own the GMD plant SAP training agenda for material management and plant execution Maintain and evolve the GMD SAP onboarding and training repositories Measure adoption and maturity of SAP processes (e.g., surveys, usage metrics, defect trends) and use insights to prioritize training, coaching, and process improvements. Future-State Deployment & Continuous Improvement (QM, WM/EWM, DMC) Serve as the business-side lead for plant-impacting deployments of: SAP Quality Management (QM), Warehouse Management / EWM and SAP Digital Manufacturing Cloud (DMC) Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Industrial Engineering, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Candidate must either be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee) or a non-U.S. Person who is eligible to obtain any required export control authorization. 5+ years of hands-on SAP experience in a manufacturing or distribution environment, with strong exposure to: Materials Management (MM) and/or Inventory Management (IM) and/or Warehouse Management (WM). Inbound logistics and receiving (ASNs, inbound deliveries, goods receipts). Experience creating and delivering SAP training and standard work for frontline users. Strong ability to analyze and troubleshoot SAP transactions and data, identify root causes across master data, configuration, and user behavior, and drive corrective actions. Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to translate complex SAP topics into clear, actionable guidance for non-technical plant personnel.
Technical / Domain
Knowledge Deep working knowledge of SAP MM/IM and related Plan-to-Produce flows. Familiarity with or exposure to basic WMS/EWM concepts is required; hands-on configuration is a plus but not mandatory. What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) 7+ years of full-time, hands-on SAP experience in manufacturing or distribution, with clear ownership of MM/IM and plant operations processes.
SAP S/4HANA
experience Plan-to-Produce / Production Planning (PTP/PP) concepts and execution. Prior experience in a defense, aerospace, or similarly regulated environment, with familiarity around ITAR/CUI, export controls, and audited processes. Direct experience leading or playing a key role in deployments of SAP QM or WM/EWM at a plant. Experience with continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) applied to material flow, receiving, or inventory processes and integrated with SAP. Strong comfort as a business product owner for low-code tools (e.g., Power Apps / Power Automate) that extend SAP and support plant operations. Demonstrated ability to influence and coach across multiple levels—from hourly plant personnel to senior leadership — building trust and credibility through hands-on support and expertise. #GMD GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.
