Job Description

Join NIST as a Mathematical Analyst performing research in Topological Data Analysis (TDA) applied to biological and chemical data. You will analyze molecular dynamics and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations, collaborate across scientific disciplines on mission-critical projects, and disseminate findings through published manuscripts and technical presentations.

Basic Requirements:
A.
Degree:
mathematics, or the equivalent of a major that included at least 24 semester hours in mathematics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in mathematics (including at least 24 semester hours in mathematics), as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The total coursework in either A or B above must have included differential and integral calculus and, in addition, four advanced mathematics courses requiring calculus or equivalent mathematics courses as a prerequisite. In addition to the above basic requirements, all applicants must have one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level (ZP-II at NIST). The specialized experience is defined as: Experience applying Topological Data Analysis (TDA) Experience utilizing computational methods and workflows to process, analyze, and interpret biophysical, biological, or chemical data generated from molecular dynamics trajectories or Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations. Experience with contributing to complex scientific research projects by collaborating across technical disciplines (e.g., mathematics, biology, chemistry). OR Master's or equivalent degree OR A combination of education and experience Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
