Job Description

Position Overview The University of Kansas Information Technology Enterprise Networking unit seeks a Senior Network Engineer to support, maintain, and enhance the university's enterprise network infrastructure. This position is responsible for advanced technical work involving the design, implementation, administration, and support of complex network systems and services. This role operates with a high degree of independence and serves as a senior-level technical resource for the networking team. The Senior Network Engineer provides guidance on complex technical issues, contributes to standards and best practices, and supports the implementation of network architecture in collaboration with designated architecture functions. This position is responsible for adhering to all applicable university and Information Technology security policies and procedures. KU is not able to provide H-1B sponsorship for this position.   • Incident Response and Problem Resolution Serve as Tier 3 support for complex network incidents and service disruptions. Diagnose and resolve advanced technical issues affecting network performance and availability. Lead incident response efforts, including coordination, communication, and resolution. Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. 20%
  • Network Administration Administer and maintain enterprise network systems, including routing, switching, wireless, and core services. Perform configuration management, software updates, and lifecycle maintenance. Support capacity planning and performance monitoring activities. Manage IP address allocation and related services. 15%
  • Network Implementation Implement network infrastructure projects, including installation, configuration, and integration of hardware and software components. Coordinate implementation activities with team members, customers, and vendors. Ensure solutions align with established standards, security requirements, and operational needs. 15%
  • Network Design and Planning Analyze business and technical requirements and develop network solutions to meet organizational needs.
Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and stakeholders on infrastructure planning and design. Contribute to the development and refinement of network standards, procedures, and best practices. Provide technical input to support long-term network planning and scalability. 10%
  • Technical Guidance and Coordination Provide technical guidance and consultation to team members on complex issues and implementations.
Review and validate technical configurations and changes for accuracy and compliance with standards. Assist with work prioritization and coordination to support service delivery objectives. Participate in project and operational work requiring advanced technical expertise. 5%
  • Documentation and Standards Compliance Develop and maintain technical documentation, including network diagrams, configurations, and procedures. Ensure documentation is complete, accurate, and aligned with established standards. Support compliance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements. 5%
  • Other Duties as Assigned Required Qualifications High School Diploma/GED and seven (7) years of relevant experience; OR Associate's degree and five (5) years of relevant experience; OR Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of relevant experience.
Three (3) years of experience in network design, implementation, configuration, and troubleshooting. Two (2) years of experience configuring enterprise network devices, including switches and routers utilizing routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF. Two (2) years of experience with IP addressing, subnetting, and core networking protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, ARP, DHCP, DNS, RADIUS, IPsec, STP/RSTP, LACP, MC-LAG). Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences, as evidenced by application materials. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information technology, or a related field. Experience in a technical leadership or senior contributor role, including mentoring others, coordinating work activities, supporting operational prioritization, and participating in enterprise IT service delivery processes such as incident management and ticket coordination. Experience contributing to network architecture, standards, or design activities in collaboration with engineering or architecture teams as evidenced by application materials. Experience with enterprise networking technologies and vendor ecosystems such as Aruba, Cisco, or Juniper, including wireless networking environments. Experience with network security technologies (e.g., firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection and prevention systems) and enterprise network operations tools including monitoring, configuration management, and
DNS/DHCP
services. Experience with network automation and infrastructure tooling such as Ansible, Python, or similar scripting and orchestration technologies. Experience with advanced networking concepts including QoS, multicast, IPv6, MPLS, and data center overlay technologies (e.g., VXLAN, EVPN). Experience with UNIX and Microsoft Windows operating systems in an enterprise environment. Relevant industry certifications (e.g., Cisco, Juniper, Aruba or equivalent).
