Job Description:
123NET, LLC is seeking a hands-on Field Engineer to support and maintain our statewide optical transport network. This role focuses on DWDM transport systems, wavelength turn-up, troubleshooting, core network equipment commissioning, fiber testing, and field maintenance across Michigan's Lower Peninsula. This is a field-based position with work at data centers, central offices, outdoor cabinets, customer locations, and wireless equipment shelters. The position includes daytime field work, scheduled overnight maintenance windows, and participation in a rotating on-call schedule. The successful candidate will be able to work independently in the field while maintaining strong communication and documentation standards. Key Responsibilities Commission, turn up, and troubleshoot DWDM wavelength services. Perform transport circuit testing, fault isolation, and service restoration. Execute scheduled maintenance activities including software upgrades, equipment replacements, fiber migrations, and network expansions. Perform fiber characterization, OTDR testing, and optical performance analysis. Respond to transport alarms, fiber outages, amplifier faults, and customer-impacting events. Support and maintain Cisco aggregation and transport infrastructure. Perform basic DC power maintenance on
- 48V telecom power systems.
Assist with occasional fusion splicing and fiber restoration activities when required. Support transport equipment located in wireless site shelters and remote network facilities. Maintain accurate circuit records, documentation, and work-order updates. Travel regularly throughout Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Participate in a rotating on-call schedule.
Required Qualifications:
3+ years of experience supporting optical transport, DWDM, carrier, or service provider networks. Experience with at least one major transport platform such as Ekinops, Ciena, Cisco, or similar. Strong understanding of optical networking fundamentals including optical power, OSNR, BER, FEC, and wavelength services. Experience performing OTDR testing and fiber troubleshooting. Working knowledge of carrier-grade fiber infrastructure and transport systems. Experience with
- 48V DC power systems and telecom safety practices.
Working knowledge of HVAC and generator systems. Ability to work scheduled overnight maintenance windows and participate in an on-call rotation. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Ability to lift 50 lbs and work safely in indoor and outdoor environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
Hands-on experience with DWDM line systems. Experience with ROADM and coherent optical transport technologies. Familiarity with Cisco IOS, Linux Experience with fusion splicing and fiber restoration. Experience supporting carrier, wholesale, or hyperscale transport networks.
Industry certifications such as:
FOA CFOT / CFOS OTT CONA / CONE BICSI RCDD
Cisco CCNA CompTIA Network+
