Job Title:
Controls Engineer Job Description The Controls Engineer designs, develops, and supports industrial control systems, including PLCs, machine vision systems, robotics, and related equipment. This role combines hands-on software engineering, electrical schematic work, and on-site commissioning with direct customer interaction. The Controls Engineer plays a key role in delivering reliable, innovative automation solutions while contributing to a growing, project-based organization with an entrepreneurial environment. Responsibilities Design and develop software for industrial control systems, including PLCs, machine vision systems, robotics, and other related automation equipment. Interpret, create, and modify electrical schematics to support control system design and integration. Install, start up, test, and debug equipment at customer locations, ensuring systems operate according to specifications. Develop and maintain clear, accurate technical documentation for control systems, software, and equipment. Program PLCs and configure machine vision systems to meet project and customer requirements. Collaborate with customers in a professional, customer-facing capacity to understand needs, provide technical guidance, and resolve issues. Troubleshoot and resolve control system, software, and hardware issues both in-house and at customer sites. Independently learn new technologies, tools, and methods to enhance system performance and reliability. Work closely with cross-functional project teams to deliver high-quality, project-based automation solutions on time. Support continuous improvement of control standards, templates, and best practices within the engineering team. Essential Skills Hands-on controls engineering experience with industrial automation systems. Software design and development experience, including programming in C#. Proven experience programming PLCs for industrial control applications. Robotics experience in an automation or manufacturing environment. Experience working with machine vision systems and vision-based inspection or guidance. Ability to interpret, create, and modify electrical schematics. Strong customer-facing skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written. Demonstrated ability to independently learn new technologies and troubleshoot complex problems. Willingness and ability to travel as required for installation, start-up, testing, and support. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline. Programming experience with PLCs and/or machine vision systems in a professional setting. Experience with key industrial automation platforms and tools (such as vision systems and PLC programming environments). Ability to work effectively in a project-based environment with shifting priorities and diverse customer requirements. Entrepreneurial mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving and process improvement. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Springfield, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $48.08 - $58.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
