Job Description

Overview We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Special Service Technician to join our team. This class encompasses responsible positions in the fire department. Special Services Technicians maintain and repair fire facilities and their operating systems such as electrical, plumbing, heating and air-conditioning systems. The employees of this class order, receive, store and maintain an inventory of supplies and parts required for the effective maintenance and operation of all fire stations. Special Services Technicians perform duties with some degree of supervision; employees have the authority to work independently in most areas. They can perform routine tasks without supervision and can perform special assigned tasks with only general instructions. Responsibilities Provides for the repair and maintenance of fire facilities and their operating systems. Installs, maintains and repairs heating and air-conditioning systems and their component parts such as thermostats, fan motors, switches and compressors. Changes air filters on air-conditioning and heating systems. Installs, maintains, and repairs overhead doors and component parts, including electric motors, drive mechanisms, panels, hinges, and rollers. Repairs and maintains plumbing systems and component parts, such as pipes, faucets, plumbing fixtures, water heaters, and sewer lines. Repairs and maintains electrical systems, including switches, wiring connections, and component parts. Performs carpentry work on station buildings. Preps and paints exterior and interior surfaces of the station. Personally tests or directs the testing of assigned fire equipment; assures that equipment meets all applicable federal, state, and local standards. Inspects, maintains, tests, and repairs different types of breathing apparatus. Disinfects self-contained breathing apparatus after each use. Uses the cascade and compressor/purifier system to refill self-contained breathing apparatus. Assists in providing for proper storage and up-to-date maintenance records of self-contained breathing apparatus. Inspects, maintains, tests, and repairs generators and emergency lighting equipment. Inspects tools for damage and to determine if any tools are missing; reports damaged/missing tools to superior officer. Inspects fire extinguishers for damage or required maintenance. Periodically counts stock of fire station supplies and parts; maintains an inventory of such items to assure an adequate supply. Follows department procedures and completes all necessary paperwork required to order and purchase station maintenance supplies, parts and equipment, ensuring such purchases are in accordance with the established budget. Qualifications Must meet all requirements of the Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Law, including being a citizen of the United States and of legal age. After offer of employment, but before beginning work in this class, must pass a physical examination, the selection and administration of which shall be authorized by the appointing Authority, designed to demonstrate good health and physical fitness sufficient to perform the essential duties of the position, with or without accommodation. Must possess a valid driver's license. Applicant must possess one of the following: high school diploma, high school equivalency certificate, high school transcript, affidavit from the issuing high school, associate's or bachelor's degree, or college transcript, any one of which must indicate that graduation has occurred or a degree awarded. Any Louisiana applicant who presents a home study diploma shall submit necessary documentation indicating Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) approval of the home study curriculum. Non-Louisiana applicants shall be required to present proof of completion of a high school curriculum which has been accredited by the applicant's state, or its state-approved agency. A certification of completion shall not be sufficient to substitute for a diploma or equivalency certificate.
