Job Description
About Oceanus Oceanus Maritime Technologies is building the operating platform for the modern maritime world. Global trade runs on ships, and we're redefining what's possible at sea by leveraging modern technology. We're a small, hands-on team based in El Segundo building full-stack systems that perform in real operating conditions across vessels, ports, and fleets. We focus on practical, deployable technology that brings safety oversight, automation, and coordination to complex maritime environments. Our founding team previously built and operated SpaceX's Autonomous Spaceport Droneships, which are among the most advanced autonomous maritime systems ever deployed. Today, we work with leading U.S. operators to bring that same rigor and systems thinking to the next generation of maritime infrastructure. About the Role We're hiring a Software Engineering Intern for the Summer or Fall term. Summer internships begin in June, and Fall internships begin in September, with a minimum 12 week commitment, and a preferred commitment of 4 to 8 months. As a Software Engineering Intern, you'll build systems that power intelligent, connected maritime operations. This includes backend services, real-time data pipelines, and operator-facing web applications that ingest and surface live vessel data. The software you build will be deployed in real-world environments where reliability, performance, and usability directly matter to operations. Our size allows interns to take significant ownership. We give interns autonomy on interdisciplinary projects that move quickly from idea to implementation. Our philosophy is to build and test in days or weeks, not months. Because of this, a portfolio or GitHub of things you've built is required to apply . Show us systems, applications, or tools you've built that reflect strong engineering fundamentals, execution, and curiosity. Key Responsibilities Contribute to the design and development of backend services and APIs for real-time maritime data Build and improve operator-facing web applications used in live environments Work on data pipelines that ingest, process, and distribute live vessel telemetry Help design and implement systems that span edge and cloud environments Prototype new features and evaluate technical trade-offs Support testing, deployment, and monitoring of production systems Work with real-world data to surface insights and improve system behavior Collaborate closely with software, electrical, and systems engineers Minimum Qualifications Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or demonstrated skill and fundamentals in software engineering Strong programming skills with one or more programming languages (Python, Go, JavaScript, or similar) Experience building non-trivial software projects from scratch (personal, academic, or professional) Interest in one or more of the following areas: databases, visualization, data processing pipelines Preferred Skills and Experience Experience building web applications (React, Angular, or similar frameworks) Familiarity with APIs, databases, or distributed systems Exposure to real-time data systems, event-driven architectures, or messaging systems Interest in working on systems that interact with real-world infrastructure (IoT, robotics, etc.) Work Environment On-site with the team at our office in El Segundo, CA Occasional travel to test sites or operator locations as needed Compensation and Benefits Interns for this role are paid an hourly rate of $40/hr - $48/hr depending on experience and education level. Internships include up to 10 hours of pre-approved weekly overtime, paid at 1.5x the base hourly rate. Actual earnings will vary depending on internship length and hours worked.
