The Principal Software Engineer is a hands-on individual contributor with deep Java/J2EE expertise, responsible for leading the technical modernization of large-scale, legacy enterprise platforms. This role has broad technical influence across teams and is accountable for driving architecture evolution, modernization strategy, and engineering excellence without direct people management. The ideal candidate is comfortable working deeply within complex legacy systems while defining and executing a clear path forward through APIs, microservices, cloud readiness, and AI-assisted development practices. This role plays a critical part in reducing technical debt, improving scalability and maintainability, and enabling the platform to meet evolving business demands.Job Responsibilities:
Modernize legacy Java/J2EE systems through assessment, refactoring, and incremental migration to microservices and APIs. Convert JSP / custom tag libs / page handlers into service/API-based implementations while maintaining functional stability. Work effectively within existing application frameworks while evolving solutions toward service oriented and API based designs as needed. Apply strong SQL skills for query design, tuning, and troubleshooting. Provide technical leadership through design reviews, code reviews, and architectural guidance, influencing engineering practices without direct people management. Collaborate closely with engineers, architects, and business stakeholders to deliver solutions in a fast paced enterprise environment. Contribute to cloud readiness and deployments; AWS/cloud experience preferred. Use enterprise approved AI tools responsibly to support engineering activities such as analysis, coding assistance, documentation, and productivity improvements. Support adoption of AI assisted development and code review workflows to improve delivery speed, quality, and maintainability over time. Adherence to and application of Envestnet legal, compliance, risk, business continuity and administrative policy within the role and department(s) including the timely completion of training & awareness, affirmations and testing as requested. As part of the responsibilities for this role, you will understand and readily support Envestnet's established corporate business practices, policies, internal controls and procedures designed to create value or minimize risk.Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field required. 10+ years application and product development experience required. Extensive experience building and modernizing Java/J2EE enterprise applications. Proven track record of leading modernization initiatives within large, complex legacy systems. Strong expertise in RESTful APIs, service oriented design, and modern application architectures. Advanced SQL skills, including query design, tuning, and troubleshooting at scale. Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and modern deployment models. Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence technical direction across teams and stakeholders.Envestnet:
