Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Engineering Technologist 3 - $106,400 - $176,000 In this position, successful candidates will apply the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics, and science to solve technical problems in support of engineering projects and research. They will plan and execute complex assignments requiring initiative, sound judgment, and technical expertise. Responsibilities include facility design, operation, maintenance, project execution, and/or research-based engineering. Candidates must work effectively both independently and collaboratively, using engineering and computer tools to deliver efficient, accurate, and high-quality results while continuously improving processes to meet customer needs. Safety and security are a primary responsibility; employees must ensure compliance, maintain training, and stop work if continuing is unsafe or compromises security. The technologist will plan and schedule detailed phases of engineering work, resolve design and coordination issues, and apply professional concepts to develop creative, effective solutions. They will prepare specifications and evaluations, conduct technical research, and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and contractors. The role may include leading or mentoring staff, supporting project controls and estimates, and ensuring adherence to established engineering policies and Laboratory standards. The successful candidate will foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment. Engineering Technologist 4 - $117,200 - $195,400 In addition to the responsibilities outlined for Level 3, the technologist at this higher level will collaborate with junior and senior engineers to deliver integrated, full-system design solutions through mentorship and technical leadership. They will support and lead research and engineering initiatives that demand innovation, independence, and expert judgment. The Technologist 4 will independently plan and execute detailed phases of engineering work, leading efforts that address complex or unique technical challenges requiring advanced insight. They will develop new methods, techniques, and solutions across related disciplines, exercising significant latitude in determining objectives, priorities, and procedures. The incumbent initiates and reviews work for self and others, provides technical oversight, and coordinates multidisciplinary engineering efforts with clients, suppliers, contractors, and internal partners. What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:
Must be able to perform installation, diagnostics, troubleshooting, service, and repair of Rockwell / Allen Bradley & Automated Logic equipment and systems. Must be able to program PLCs and HMIs systems for new or modified equipment utilizing RSLogix 5, 500, 5000, FactoryTalk Studio software, Studio5000, ControlLogix and CompactLogix & WebCTRL. Must be able to program and commission various variable frequency drives (VFD). Must have demonstrated history of obsolescence management and replacement/upgrade of legacy devices. Must be able to execute supporting activities, manage operating workflows, and continuous improvement of existing systems. Must be able to maintain software documentation(qualification summary reports, system audits, technical reports, etc.) and technical baseline. Expert knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling, and design. Expert knowledge of complex mathematical formulas and computations. Expert knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods. Expert knowledge of engineering principles and technical responsibilities within the designated discipline. Expert knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards, and guides. Expert knowledge of industry, regulatory, andDOE/NNSA
codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the discipline. Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 4: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires: Advanced-level expertise in the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics, and science applied to unique or complex problems. Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring others in technical areas or project subgroups. Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule.Work Schedule:
This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees maybe eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.Work Location:
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.Position Commitment:
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
