This role is responsible for supporting our production EDI and claims management systems, resolving operational support tickets, troubleshooting data and application issues, coordinating and validating production deployments, and implementing practical improvements that keep our systems reliable and our operations moving. The ideal candidate has a college-level technical foundation, at least 2 years of professional software development or related technical experience, strong troubleshooting ability, production support discipline, and clear communication skills. About the Role The Application Operations Engineer supports the company's production EDI and claims management systems by resolving operational support tickets, troubleshooting production issues, coordinating and performing production deployments, validating releases, and implementing software or process improvements that improve reliability, efficiency, and operational continuity. This role sits at the intersection of Operations, Engineering, Product, and production support. The ideal candidate is technically capable, detail-oriented, comfortable working directly with live production systems, and motivated by keeping business-critical workflows moving. Primary Role Focus The primary focus of this role includes: Production application support and issue resolution for EDI and claims-related systems Production deployment coordination, execution, validation, and post-release monitoring Operational improvements to production systems, including scripts, queries, automation, and targeted software changes Cross-functional support for Operations, Product, Software Development, and leadership Essential Duties and Responsibilities Work, triage, and resolve EDI, claims system, and application-related support tickets in a timely and professional manner. Monitor production workflows, transaction processing, claim queues, exceptions, failures, and related operational processes. Troubleshoot application, data, integration, workflow, and production processing issues across EDI and claims management systems. Coordinate, perform, and validate production deployments, including release readiness checks, deployment execution, smoke testing, and post-deployment verification. Assist with deployment planning, rollback awareness, release documentation, and production change-management procedures. Identify opportunities for operational improvements in existing programs, systems, workflows, and production processes; discuss recommendations with the CTO, Senior Software Developer, or other designated leaders. Implement small-to-medium software fixes, scripts, database queries, utilities, automation, configuration updates, and process improvements as directed. Perform testing and validation of fixes, enhancements, deployments, and operational changes before and after production release. Develop, maintain, and follow quality assurance procedures, support procedures, deployment checklists, and operational runbooks. Maintain and upgrade existing solutions or systems as directed by engineering leadership. Collaborate closely with software developers, product managers, operations team members, and leadership to maintain and improve production systems. Escalate complex engineering, architectural, security, compliance, or production-risk matters to the appropriate leader promptly. Perform all other duties as assigned. Production Deployment Responsibilities Prepare production deployment materials, checklists, release notes, and validation steps as required. Coordinate deployment timing and communication with Engineering, Operations, Product, and other stakeholders. Execute or support production deployments in accordance with company procedures and approval requirements. Perform pre-deployment checks, post-deployment smoke testing, production validation, and issue monitoring. Document deployment outcomes, issues encountered, remediation steps, and follow-up actions. Help maintain reliable, repeatable, and auditable production release practices. Universal Duties and Professional Expectations Demonstrate respectful conduct toward customers, vendors, and fellow workforce members. Maintain strong oral and written communication, especially when documenting production issues, deployment status, and support-ticket updates. Stay current on tools, systems, practices, and knowledge required for the role. Complete assigned work and company compliance requests in a timely and efficient manner. Bring any breach or potential breach of sensitive customer data to management's immediate attention. Follow company policies, security expectations, change-management requirements, and data-protection procedures. Required Education Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field preferred. An equivalent combination of education and directly relevant professional experience may be considered. Required Experience and Qualifications 2+ years of professional experience in software development, application support engineering, production support, DevOps-adjacent engineering, or a similar technical role. Hands-on experience writing, modifying, testing, and supporting software code, scripts, queries, utilities, or configuration changes in a business or production environment. Working knowledge of the software development life cycle, including requirements interpretation, development, testing, deployment, validation, and post-release support. Experience supporting, troubleshooting, or maintaining business-critical software applications, preferably in a production environment. Ability to develop and execute unit tests, smoke tests, workflow validation, and issue-reproduction steps for code components, application changes, configuration updates, or complete workflows. Programming or scripting knowledge sufficient to implement fixes, utilities, automation, reporting support, or operational improvements. Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, including the ability to investigate issues across applications, data, integrations, logs, and operational processes. Comfort working with production systems, deployment procedures, change control, release validation, and timely escalation of production risk. Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, including ticket updates, deployment status, issue summaries, and recommended next steps. Preferred Experience and Qualifications Experience with EDI, healthcare claims, claims management systems, clearinghouse workflows, or transaction processing environments. Experience with SQL, databases, logs, queues, APIs, batch jobs, file transfers, or integration monitoring. Experience with production deployment tools, version control, CI/CD pipelines, release management, or operational runbooks. Experience in application support, production support, DevOps-adjacent, release engineering, or systems operations roles. Familiarity with HIPAA, data privacy, sensitive customer data handling, or regulated production environments. Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys solving practical technical problems in a production environment. This person should be comfortable working through support tickets, investigating system behavior, communicating clearly with business and technical teams, and helping ensure that production releases are deployed safely and successfully.
