Senior IoT Developer Job Description The Senior IoT Developer leads global digital manufacturing and automation initiatives, shaping the Industry 4.0 roadmap from concept through deployment. This role defines and maintains industrial architectures across edge, data platforms, and cloud, while enabling secure, data‑driven operations on the factory floor. You will drive measurable improvements in efficiency, quality, uptime, and safety by integrating shop‑floor systems with enterprise IT and analytics platforms, and by championing standards, cybersecurity, and governance for smart manufacturing worldwide. Responsibilities Lead global automation and digital manufacturing projects from initial concept through design, implementation, and deployment. Review and validate solution designs to ensure robust integration, operational performance, and adherence to best practices. Ensure automation and digital initiatives deliver measurable gains in efficiency, quality, equipment uptime, and safety. Define and maintain reference architectures spanning edge devices, data platforms, and cloud environments for Industry 4.0 solutions. Standardize connectivity and integration between shop‑floor assets such as PLCs, robots, and sensors, and enterprise systems including MES/MOM, SCADA, and historians. Establish scalable integration patterns using technologies such as OPC UA, MQTT, and Unified Namespace concepts. Enable end‑to‑end data pipelines from factory equipment to analytics and cloud platforms. Support the development of dashboards and analytics for OEE, downtime, labor, energy consumption, and quality performance. Promote and support the use of digital twins for manufacturing and logistics assets to enable simulation, monitoring, and predictive insights. Design and maintain secure industrial architectures, including zones, conduits, and industrial DMZs. Align industrial architectures and controls with recognized cybersecurity frameworks and corporate security policies. Support compliance with global data privacy and cross‑border data transfer regulations. Coordinate industrial cybersecurity assessments, remediation activities, and incident response efforts for digital manufacturing environments. Drive cost‑reduction initiatives through automation, predictive maintenance, and process optimization. Track and report financial performance of digital initiatives, including ROI, payback period, and EBIT impact. Prioritize digital projects based on measurable business outcomes and key operational pain points. Lead and facilitate a global steering community for manufacturing digitalization initiatives. Align digital manufacturing priorities with plant, regional, and divisional leadership. Develop and promote capability‑building and training approaches to strengthen digital problem‑solving at the site level. Provide hands‑on guidance for integration across PLC/SCADA, MES/MOM, and cloud data platforms. Collaborate closely with operations, IT, engineering, and vendor partners to ensure cohesive solution delivery. Apply change‑management and vendor‑management practices to ensure successful multi‑site, global deployments with clear operational impact. Essential Skills Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or a related technical field. 10+ years of experience in manufacturing systems, automation, or digital manufacturing programs. 7+ years of experience in manufacturing operations and digitalization (Industry 4.0/IIoT) with multi‑site deployments. Proven leadership of multi‑site, global deployments that delivered measurable operational impact. Strong experience integrating industrial systems such as PLC/SCADA, MES/MOM, and historians with enterprise IT and cloud platforms. Deep understanding of industrial communication protocols and networks. Hands‑on experience with PLC, SCADA/HMI, MES/MOM, and industrial data historians. Experience with industrial edge computing, device management, and containerized deployments. Experience with cloud IoT platforms and modern analytics tools. Knowledge of industrial cybersecurity principles, architectures, and standards. Strong management, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills. Demonstrated change‑management capabilities in complex manufacturing environments. Demonstrated vendor‑management skills in the context of automation and digital projects. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in a manufacturing environment; automotive industry experience is preferred. Technical knowledge of industrial protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus/TCP, Profinet, and EtherNet/IP. Experience with edge runtimes and containers (for example, Docker or Podman), device management, and over‑the‑air update strategies. Experience with MES/MOM, SCADA/HMI, historians, and cloud IoT platforms such as Azure and AWS. Data engineering exposure with technologies such as Kafka, Databricks or Snowflake, and business intelligence tools such as Power BI or Tableau. Understanding of cybersecurity frameworks and standards such as IEC‑based standards andNIST SP 800
‑82, including identity management and secure remote access. Industrial cybersecurity certifications (preferred). Cloud or IoT platform certifications for Azure or AWS (preferred). Lean or Six Sigma certification, ideally at Black Belt level (preferred). Project management or agile delivery certifications such as PMP, Scrum, or SAFe (preferred). Ability to lead a global smart manufacturing roadmap and transform how factories connect, analyze data, and drive measurable business results. Work Environment This role primarily operates onsite within a manufacturing environment, working closely with operations, engineering, and IT teams. The position reports into Senior divisional leadership and involves approximately 10% travel to other divisions, including periodic international trips for best‑practice sharing and support of global deployments. The work setting is highly technical, with frequent interaction with shop‑floor equipment such as PLCs, robots, sensors, and industrial networks, as well as cloud platforms and analytics tools. While the role is mostly onsite, there may be limited opportunities for remote work depending on project needs and collaboration requirements. The environment emphasizes continuous improvement, cross‑functional teamwork, and the adoption of modern Industry 4.0 technologies to create safe, efficient, and data‑driven manufacturing operations. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Newaygo, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $130000.00/hr.
