z/OS Operational Engineer

Job Description The z/OS Operational Engineer is responsible for day-to-day operational support of the mainframe environment, with a strong focus on production stability, knowledge-based troubleshooting, and operational processes. This role is less project- and engineering-driven and more centered on running, monitoring, and supporting the mainframe reliably. The engineer will manage operational change control, scheduling, and override processes, while partnering with vendors and internal teams to ensure smooth production operations. This position emphasizes operational knowledge, execution, and process adherence within the z/OS environment rather than deep system engineering or architecture design. $55 - $65 Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and education. Skills and Requirements Operational Mainframe Experience:

-Hands-on, day-to-day operational experience on and around the mainframe. -Strong understanding of production support processes within a z/OS environment. z/

OS Knowledge:

-z/OS fundamentals and components (JES2, JCL, USS awareness). -Job monitoring, troubleshooting, restarts, and overrides.

Scheduling & Operations:

-Experience with mainframe scheduling tools and processes. -Understanding of batch cycles, dependencies, reruns, and recovery procedures.

Change & Incident Management:

-Experience managing operational change control. -Comfortable working within ITIL-style operational processes.

Soft Skills:

-Strong communication skills for coordination with vendors and internal teams. -Ability to follow documented procedures while making sound operational decisions under pressure. Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience. Minimum 5 years of operational support experience in a z/OS mainframe environment. Familiarity with RACF or other mainframe security tools from an operational standpoint. Exposure to disaster recovery operations and execution. Experience working in environments with managed service providers. Basic scripting or automation exposure (helpful, but not required).
