Job Description

Overview SCCI is seeking a AR/VR Developer III to join our team! This is a senior level position that will serve as a foundational member of a newly established R&D department focused on cutting-edge simulation and immersive training solutions for defense and government customers. The ideal candidate is a highly self-directed technologist with deep hands-on experience in AR/VR development and design who thrives in a fast-moving, build-from-scratch environment. Responsibilities:
Ideate and experiment to design user experiences for
AR/VR/XR
applications from loosely defined customer objectives and translates ambiguous requirements into actionable design concepts Contributes to defining project objectives, MVP requirements, and key milestones in collaboration with program leadership Creates prototype solutions leveraging Unity, Unreal, and other software platforms to enhance military training and operational capabilities within customer constraints for hardware, software, firmware and processing limitations Demonstrates prototypes to potential customers, industry partners, and at tradeshows and user forums Refines designs and prototypes based on user feedback and leads iterative development cycles informed by user feedback, usability testing, and operational context Mentors junior employees to apply creativity while developing technical expertise applied to R&D projects and fosters a culture of disciplined experimentation and technical growth within the R&D team Researches and evaluates emerging
AR/VR/XR
hardware, software, and development frameworks to inform platform selection and R&D investment decisions Collaborates with program managers, engineers, and subject matter experts to ensure immersive solutions align with operational requirements and customer mission needs Produces technical documentation including design rationale, architecture decisions, and prototype evaluation reports sufficient to support proposals, reviews, and transition to program of record Maintains awareness of the competitive landscape, industry trends, and government R&D priorities relevant to immersive training and simulation
Essential Skills and Experience:
Must be a U.S. Citizen and have active Secret Security Clearance Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, Game Design, or a closely related technical field Five (5)+ years of hands-on
AR/VR/XR
application development with a portfolio of shipped or fielded prototypes demonstrating end-to-end ownership from concept through delivery Proficiency in Unity as a primary development platform, including scripting, scene management, performance optimization, and build pipeline configuration for standalone VR hardware Direct experience developing and deploying applications on enterprise VR hardware (VIVE Focus Vision or comparable platforms), including device management, OpenXR integration, and hardware constraint navigation Demonstrated ability to translate loosely defined objectives into functional, iterative prototypes without requiring detailed requirements documentation Demonstrated experience applying UX/UI design principles to immersive environments, including spatial interaction design, comfort/cybersickness mitigation, and user-centered design methodology Experience conducting or supporting user testing and usability evaluations, and incorporating findings into iterative design cycles Experience working within defense, government, or simulation/training domains; familiarity with military operational contexts, training workflows, or DoD acquisition environments strongly preferred Demonstrated experience presenting prototypes, demos, or technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, customers, or at industry events Proficiency with Atlassian suite (Jira, Confluence) for agile project tracking, documentation, and team collaboration in an R&D environment Working proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office tools for documentation, reporting, and cross-functional communication Demonstrated experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, generative design tools, or LLM-assisted prototyping) to accelerate R&D workflows
