Job Description
Job Description Position Summary The Logical DB2 Mainframe Engineer plays a key role in designing, modeling, and optimizing DB2 databases on the IBM z/OS platform. This position focuses on logical data architecture, schema governance, and collaboration with application development teams to ensure high quality, scalable, and efficient database solutions. The engineer will help shape enterprise data structures, enforce standards, and support mission critical applications across the organization. - Develop, maintain, and enhance logical data models for DB2 on z/OS.
- Translate business and application requirements into well structured database schemas.
- Define and manage tables, indexes, views, relationships, and referential integrity rules.
- Ensure logical designs align with enterprise data architecture and modeling standards. Schema Governance & Standards
- Establish and enforce naming conventions, modeling guidelines, and metadata practices.
- Review and approve database design changes proposed by development teams.
- Maintain documentation for logical structures, data flows, and data lineage. SQL & Performance Optimization
- Analyze SQL statements and access paths to identify logical design improvements.
- Recommend schema adjustments to enhance performance and reduce resource consumption.
- Collaborate with developers to promote efficient SQL coding and DB2 best practices. Collaboration & Support
- Partner with application teams to design new features and support ongoing development.
- Work closely with system DBAs to ensure logical designs translate effectively into physical implementations.
- Participate in project planning, impact analysis, and release management activities. Data Quality & Integrity
- Ensure logical models support data accuracy, consistency, and compliance requirements.
- Implement and maintain referential integrity, normalization, and data validation rules.
- Support audits, data governance initiatives, and regulatory reporting needs. Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience with DB2 for z/OS, with emphasis on logical database design.
- Proficiency in SQL, access path analysis, and query tuning.
- Hands on experience with data modeling tools (ERwin, IBM Data Architect, IDz Data Studio, etc.).
- Solid understanding of mainframe concepts, JCL, and application development workflows.
- Ability to communicate complex database concepts to technical and non technical audiences. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with performance monitoring tools (OMEGAMON, Query Monitor, BMC, CA).
- Familiarity with DevOps pipelines for mainframe environments.
- Exposure to modernization initiatives such as APIs, data virtualization, or cloud integration.
- Knowledge of enterprise data governance frameworks.
