Full Job Description Summary/Objective:
The IBMi / RPG Manual Tester performs Black Box testing of enhancements, modifications, and newly developed functionality specific to our IBMi (AS/400) environment and RPG-based applications. This role supports the integrity of our core systems by executing structured test plans, identifying defects, and collaborating cross-functionally with development, operations, and business teams to ensure high-quality releases. Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field of study Technology Analyst Experience:
Minimum 3-5 years IBMi (AS/400) or RPG Application Experience:
Minimum 2-3 years Manual / Black-Box QA Testing Experience:
Minimum 1-2 years Creating Test Cases and Test Scenarios Experience:
Minimum 1-2 years Preferred Education and Experience Experience working in the insurance, healthcare, or benefits administration industry Familiarity with Delta Dental or dental/medical claims processing systems Exposure to automated testing tools or interest in developing automation skills Associate or certification in Software Quality Assurance or related discipline Competencies:
Handles confidential and proprietary information in a professional manner Solid working knowledge of IBMi (AS/400) architecture, green screen navigation, and RPG application behavior Proficient with issue logging and test management applications (e.g., JIRA) Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and where QA fits within it Experienced with User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and regression testing methodologies Familiarity with Agile/Scrum development principles Strong grasp of the testing lifecycle, including test planning, execution, defect tracking, and closure Meticulous attention to detail with a structured and methodical approach to testing Resourceful and self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple test cycles simultaneously Excellent verbal communication and writing skills, including clear defect documentation Flexibility to adjust to evolving priorities and meet release deadlines Proactive with strong follow-up skills to ensure defects are resolved and retested promptly Ability to work well with all levels of the organization, including developers, business analysts, and leadership A track record of collaboration with cross-functional teams IBMi / RPG Manual Tester Responsibilities:
Develop and execute manual test cases and test scenarios for IBMi/RPG-based applications, including batch processes, job scheduling, and green screen interfaces Perform Black Box testing of system enhancements, bug fixes, and new functionality to validate expected behavior against functional specifications Execute regression testing during new software releases and document findings clearly Perform test execution independently and by shadowing end users during UAT cycles Log, track, and manage defects in JIRA, providing detailed reproduction steps, screenshots, and supporting documentation Collaborate with developers and business analysts to clarify requirements and ensure functionality aligns with specifications Validate data integrity across IBMi file structures, output queues, and report generation Support UAT cycles by coordinating with business stakeholders and translating findings into actionable defect reports Offer systematic and descriptive input to development on findings discovered in UAT and production environments Maintain thorough documentation of test plans, test cases, test results, and QA processes Participate in release planning and sprint ceremonies as a QA representative Assist in identifying opportunities to improve testing efficiency and consistency across the QA team Author or contribute to policies and procedures related to IBMi testing processes as required Work Environment:
