Job Description

Job Summary, This is our first dedicated technology hire. We need someone who can handle the full range of IT and digital needs for a growing construction management business, from setting up laptops and managing our Microsoft 365 environment, through to building project schedules in Microsoft Project, developing dashboards and internal tools, and exploring how AI-enabled tools can give us an edge. You will not be specializing in one thing. You will be the person we rely on for everything that touches a screen. Some days that means troubleshooting a Teams issue or onboarding a new employee. Other days it means building an estimating spreadsheet, creating a progress tracking dashboard, or evaluating an AI tool that could automate part of our workflow. This is not a back-office support role. You will work directly with the company's leadership and project teams, and your work will directly shape how we deliver projects. As the company grows, this role is designed to grow into leading our entire digital and AI strategy. We want someone who sees this as a career-defining opportunity, not just a job. What You Will Do IT Administration & Business Systems Set up and manage our Microsoft 365 environment — Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, including user accounts, permissions, file structures, and security Manage hardware procurement, setup, and support for office and field staff (laptops, tablets, phones) Be the go-to person for day-to-day IT issues across the business Set up and maintain cloud storage, backup procedures, and data security practices Manage software licences and vendor relationships for business tools Project Scheduling & Progress Management (Training will be provided) Build and maintain project schedules in Microsoft Project, working closely with project managers and site leadership Track project progress against baselines, produce schedule variance reports, and flag risks Support earned value reporting (CPI/SPI) by connecting schedule data to cost and progress information Create and maintain lookahead plans (2-6 week) and crew loading schedules Produce clear, visual progress reports for internal leadership and client-facing updates Dashboards, Tools & Automations Build and maintain internal dashboards for project performance, cost tracking, and operational KPIs Develop and improve estimating templates and workbooks in Excel, including formula-driven labour models Create automated workflows and reporting using Power BI, Power Automate, or similar tools Build lightweight internal tools, trackers, forms, databases that reduce manual admin for project teams Support data capture and reporting from project sites, making information accessible and actionable AI & Digital Innovation Stay current with AI-enabled tools and platforms relevant to construction, project management, and business operations Evaluate and pilot AI tools for practical applications, document analysis, progress photo interpretation, report generation, estimating support, communication drafting Recommend and implement productivity tools that give the business a competitive advantage Over time, take increasing ownership of the company's digital strategy as the business scales and the role evolves Site & Field Support Occasional travel to project sites (warehouses, airports) to understand field operations first-hand and support technology deployment Ensure tools and systems work in real job site conditions, not just in the office Support site teams with technology setup, troubleshooting, and training on digital tools Who We Are Looking For The Essentials A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related field or equivalent practical experience that demonstrates the same capability 1-4 years of professional experience in an IT, technical, or digital role (internships and co-ops count) Strong working knowledge of Microsoft 365 administration (Teams, SharePoint, Outlook, OneDrive) Proficiency in Microsoft Excel at an advanced level formulas, pivot tables, data models, and ideally VBA or Power Query Experience with or willingness to quickly learn Microsoft Project for scheduling Comfortable with data, you can pull information from multiple sources, structure it, and present it clearly Practical experience with or genuine enthusiasm for AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, or similar) and an ability to figure out how to apply them to real business problems Self-starter mentality, you will often be figuring things out on your own rather than following a playbook Clear communicator who can work with non-technical people without jargon Bonus Points Experience with Power BI, Power Automate, or other Microsoft Power Platform tools Any exposure to construction, logistics, warehousing, or manufacturing environments Familiarity with project management software beyond MS Project (Procore, Primavera, Smartsheet) Experience building web-based tools or dashboards (Python, JavaScript, SQL, or low-code platforms) Familiarity with cloud administration (Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud) Interest in or knowledge of lean construction, production management, or operational excellence methodologies The Right Person You are naturally curious. When you see a manual process, your instinct is to find a better way. You are comfortable switching between fixing a printer and building a data model in the same afternoon. You are not precious about job titles — you want to get stuck in, learn fast, and grow with a business that rewards initiative. You understand that AI is a tool, not magic. You are interested in what it can actually do today, not just what the hype says. You are excited by the idea of being the person who brings modern technology into an industry that is still catching up. You do not need to have construction experience. We will teach you the industry. What we cannot teach is resourcefulness, curiosity, and the drive to make things work. Where This Role Goes We are being upfront: this is a broad role in a small company, and the early months will involve plenty of hands-on IT work alongside the more strategic stuff. But we have a clear vision for where this leads. As Mercer Dalton Group grows, so does this role. We are building an Installation Operating System — a suite of digital tools, methods, and AI-enabled platforms that will define how we deliver projects. The person in this role will progressively take ownership of that digital strategy, eventually leading the function and potentially managing a small team. We are looking for someone who wants to build something, not just maintain something. If you want a predictable 9-to-5 in a large IT department, this is not the right fit. If you want to be the person who shapes how a growing company uses technology from day one, this could be exactly what you are looking for.
