Telecom Wireless Engineer - Power Utility Job Summary The Telecom Wireless Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of mission-critical wireless communication systems that support power utility operations. This role ensures reliable, secure, and high-performance communications for grid operations, field workforce connectivity, SCADA systems, and smart grid technologies. ______________________________ __________ Key Responsibilities Network Design & Engineering Design and engineer wireless communication systems (e.g., microwave, LTE/Private LTE/5G, point-to-point and point-to-multipoint radios). Develop network architecture to support utility applications such as SCADA, AMI, teleprotection, and substation automation. Perform RF planning, link budget analysis, frequency coordination, and path studies. Ensure solutions meet performance, reliability, and regulatory standards. Implementation & Deployment Lead or support deployment of wireless infrastructure including towers, antennas, routers, and backhaul systems. Coordinate with construction, field crews, and vendors during installation and commissioning. Validate system performance through testing and commissioning activities. Operations & Maintenance Monitor network performance and troubleshoot wireless communication issues. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on telecom assets. Maintain system documentation, diagrams, and asset records. Security & Compliance Implement cybersecurity best practices in alignment with NERC CIP and other regulatory requirements. Ensure communications systems meet utility reliability and compliance standards. Manage access controls, encryption, and secure configurations. Project Management & Collaboration Support capital projects involving telecom infrastructure upgrades and expansions. Collaborate with IT, OT (Operational Technology), engineering, and operations teams. Manage vendor relationships and technical deliverables. ______________________________ __________ Required Qualifications Bachelor s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Engineering, or related field. 3-10+ years of experience in wireless communications engineering (utility experience strongly preferred). Strong understanding of RF principles, propagation, and interference analysis. Experience with wireless technologies such as: o Microwave (licensed/unlicensed) o Private
LTE / CBRS / 5G
o Wi-Fi and mesh networks Familiarity with SCADA and utility communication requirements. ______________________________ __________ Preferred Qualifications Experience in electric utility or critical infrastructure environments. Knowledge of
NERC CIP
standards and compliance requirements.
Certifications such as:
o
CCNP/CCIE
(Cisco) o CWNP (Certified Wireless Network Professional) o Vendor-specific certifications (Cambium, Nokia, Ericsson, etc.) Experience with network monitoring tools and RF planning software (e.g., Pathloss, Atoll).
