Ruby on Rails Software Engineer, (Consultant, Engineering & Technical Services) Fearless Solutions $96,132•$162,462 life insurance, parental leave, sick time, 401(k) United States, Maryland, Baltimore 235 Lee Street (Show on map) Apr 10, 2026 Job Requirements Ruby on Rails Software Engineer (Consultant, Engineering & Technical Services) Fearless is seeking a Ruby on Rails Software Engineer to support a project that provides comprehensive support and modernization services for a search engine for the federal government's hosted platform that serves over 1,500 agency websites and processes more than 200 million annual public searches.

Key outcomes of this work include a seamless migration to a new search engine technology, enhanced relevance and indexing capabilities, strengthened security and compliance posture, and improved operational efficiency through automation, containerization, and consolidated infrastructure. At Fearless, this Consultant collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, secure, and maintainable systems across all stages of the software and data lifecycle. This role is instrumental in delivering secure, efficient, and scalable solutions that directly impact the success of projects, teams, and organizational goals.

This role will possess and/or develop the skillsto be able to span the domains of software development, data engineering, infrastructure automation, information assurance, and AI/ML integration at a practical application level of proficiency.

This Consultant role will work on projects that allow them to contribute across the entire technology stack-software, infrastructure, data, AI, and security-to ensure quality, speed, and innovation in delivery. The Impact You Will Create in this

PROJECT SKILL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Frontend Modern JavaScript React (or similar component-based framework)
HTML5 / CSS3
Understanding of web accessibility (WCAG 2.1+) Semantic HTML ARIA patterns Screen reader compatibility Backend Ruby on Rails (experience maintaining long-lived Rails applications strongly preferred) RESTful API design Background job processing (e.g., Sidekiq) Authentication & authorization Strong domain modeling and service-layer design Search & Data Systems Search engines: OpenSearch Demonstrated understanding of indexing pipelines, relevance tuning, synonyms, boosting, facets, and filters Data ingestion from crawlers and feeds Debugging relevance issues and ranking anomalies Other desired experience: Refactoring safely in production systems Proficient in AWS cloud computing
