The program provides hands-on exposure to laboratory research and introduces fundamental concepts in biomaterials, tissue engineering, and medical device development. The primary goal is to help the student understand the research process from idea to experimentation and data interpretation. The internship will take place in the Biofabrication and Functional Materials Lab (BFF Lab) located in the Missouri Protoplex facility at Missouri University of Science and Technology, under supervision of Dr. Fateme Fayyazbakhsh, Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The student will be exposed to a multidisciplinary research environment focused on biomaterials, 3D bioprinting, and translational biomedical applications.
Learning Objectives:
Understanding the overall research workflow, including problem definition, experimental design, and data analysis Gain exposure to research methodology and laboratory best practices Develop basic skills in data handling and introductory statistical analysis Learn fundamental cell culture techniques (under supervision) Gain hands-on experience with basic physical characterization methods Introduction to mechanical characterization and rheological behavior of soft materials Responsibilities Assist graduate and undergraduate students and lab members with ongoing experiments Maintain accurate and organized lab notes Participate in group meetings and discussions Support basic sample preperation and testing and lab cleaning Complete a short final presentation or summary of their experience Preferred Qualifications High school student with strong interest in biomedical engineering or related fields Strong motivation to learn and engage in a research environment Good communication and organizational skills Ability to follow safety protocols and work under supervision Anticipated Hiring Range The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $15.50 hourly. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
