TEMPORARY PART-TIME POSITION
(up to 30 hours per week)POSITION SUMMARY
The Tribal Cultural Monitor serves a crucial function in protecting and preserving cultural and historic resources. The Tribal Cultural Monitor will be assigned to development/construction projects to participate in and obtain firsthand knowledge of archaeological excavations and construction in areas with cultural sensitivity or the potential for cultural deposits. The Monitor is anticipated to receive various assignments, and some sensitive areas may encounter buried artifacts, features, and human remains.ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Monitor all ground distribution activities, including mass grading, grubbing, weed abatement, trenching, and excavation on previously disturbed and undisturbed ground. Ability to recognize cultural artifacts, human remains, village sites, and midden deposits; must be able to read maps and utilize a compass. Request excavation work to stop so that discoveries can be evaluated. Help to ensure that Native American human remains and any associated grave items are treated with culturally appropriate dignity. Travel to construction/project sites as needed. Attend/participate in job-related conferences & training, resulting in traveling and overnight stays. Keep detailed notes and record information appropriately for site protection records. Produce daily and weekly reports of monitoring activities. Establish and maintain confidential and legal files and records; edit reports, check logs, and other data for accuracy, completeness, and conformity to established standards. Operate various office machines, including iPads, computers, printers, and copiers. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Perform other duties as assigned.REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ ABILITIES
Basic knowledge of current local research methods and field application of archaeological principles. Basic knowledge of federal, state, local, and tribal legislation about cultural resources. Must communicate verbally and in writing clearly, effectively, and courteously with Wilton Rancheria Department staff, members, field construction supervisors, and staff. Must continuously maintain a courteous and professional rapport with the members and staff of the Wilton Rancheria Must be respectful and sensitive to the values and culture of the Wilton Rancheria Tribal community. Must be able to effectively deal with various interruptions that may arise while performing employment-essential duties. Must be caring, empathetic, and dependable. Must be able to work independently with little supervision. Must always adhere to the highest standard of professional conduct. Ability to have positive, personable, and objective relationships.QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. Cultural Resources Monitor Program Certificate (preferred). Miwok/Nisenan cultural training will be provided. One (1) year of work-related experience. Driver's License and Insurance Requirements Possess a valid California license at the appropriate level, including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, to perform the position's essential job functions and qualify for the Tribe's vehicle insurance, plus provide proof of personal vehicle insurance. Travel Requirements Local travel is required. Travel outside of the state is occasionally needed. Work Conditions Working conditions may include but are not limited to, the following: Bending at the waist and sitting still for extended periods; dexterity of the hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to read reports and data; and occasionally lifting 30 pounds or more. The noise level in the work environment varies depending on the task. Native Preference Policy Among qualified applicants, preference is given to Wilton Rancheria Tribal Members, then to spouses of Wilton Rancheria Tribal Members, and other Native Americans.
