Job Title:
Tool and Die Design Engineer Job Description This role focuses on reviewing and optimizing tool and die designs for automotive metal stamping, ensuring parts are feasible to manufacture, processes are efficient, and tooling meets customer and industry standards. You will collaborate closely with overseas tooling partners and internal teams, using advanced simulation and CAD tools to improve manufacturability, quality, and cost-effectiveness across progressive, tandem, and transfer dies. Responsibilities Analyze Autoform simulations produced by overseas tooling partners to assess the feasibility of stamped parts and identify potential forming issues. Identify design or process concerns uncovered in simulations and recommend product or process changes to improve manufacturability, robustness, and efficiency. Evaluate process layouts provided by overseas tooling partners to ensure they meet specifications, blank size requirements, and production constraints. Review die designs to confirm compliance with customer requirements, industry quality standards, and internal best practices. Verify that die designs are compatible with existing production equipment and tooling standards. Propose design modifications to enhance die functionality, performance, and reliability throughout the stamping process. Use CAD viewing tools such as NX, Catia, and Spinfire to review, interpret, and validate tooling and die designs. Apply GD&T principles to ensure dimensional accuracy, proper tolerances, and robust part and tool design. Collaborate with diverse, international teams, including overseas tooling partners, to clarify requirements, resolve design issues, and align on solutions. Prepare and present clear documentation, reports, and recommendations using Microsoft Office tools to support design reviews and decision-making. Contribute technical input to process layout evaluations, strip layout reviews, and die design assessments to support efficient production and consistent quality. Support continuous improvement initiatives in tool and die design, focusing on manufacturability, cost optimization, and global competitiveness. Essential Skills 5+ years of experience in an engineering or die design role, or at least 3+ years of engineering experience combined with previous toolmaker background. Proven experience in tool and die for automotive metal stamping, including progressive, tandem, and transfer dies. Proficiency with CAD viewing tools such as NX, Catia, and Spinfire. Solid understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and its application in tooling and part design. Familiarity with industry standards and regulations specific to tool and die design. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Ability to review and interpret Autoform simulations and relate results to tooling and process changes. Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with diverse, international teams. Demonstrated ability to review and assess die designs and process layouts for manufacturability and compliance. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience evaluating strip layouts for automotive metal stamping processes. Hands-on experience reviewing and validating die designs from external or overseas tooling partners. background working with the global market, particularly with partners or suppliers in Asia. Costing and estimating experience related to tooling, dies, or stamping processes. Experience in tool and die design engineering within the automotive sector. Familiarity with stamping operations and tooling design best practices. Comfort working in a family-owned environment with long-tenured team members. Interest in contributing to a growing business with expanding programs across multiple automotive customers. Work Environment The role operates in a professional engineering and manufacturing environment focused on automotive metal stamping and tool and die design. You will work closely with overseas tooling partners, particularly in the global market, and regularly use tools such as Autoform, NX, Catia, Spinfire, and Microsoft Office applications. The company recently transitioned to new ownership in 2024 while maintaining a family-owned culture, and many team members are long-tenured, creating a stable and collaborative atmosphere. Business volume is growing, with increasing work across multiple automotive customers, providing exposure to a variety of programs and tooling challenges. Work is primarily office-based with regular interaction with manufacturing and tooling environments, where standard safety practices and appropriate attire for engineering and plant visits are expected.
