The Portland Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department is comprised of 160 full-time and over 250 seasonal staff dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Portland, Maine. They achieve this by operating cultural venues, running community programs (including Before and After School, Swim Lessons, and Senior Adult programs), and maintaining public buildings, waterfront infrastructure, 70 parks, 40+ miles of trails, 13 cemeteries, and 30 playgrounds. Their diverse team, including Park Maintainers, Lifeguards, Event Managers, Horticulturalists, and many others, works collaboratively to provide spaces and opportunities for social connection, recreation, and community development.
Job Summary:
The Public Buildings Division is currently hiring for a trades worker position. This position will work in conjunction with other trades professionals to perform duties such as floor plan layout for commercial space, drywall hanging/patch/repair, painting, rough carpentry including general construction and maintenance of City-owned buildings, piers, floats and maintaining areas of green space and snow removal on the Waterfront. This position will require heavy lifting and carrying of supplies needed for projects. The applicant must possess a willingness to assist and learn different operations of the Public Buildings Division and a dedication to getting the job done in an effective and efficient manner.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Operates trucks and other motorized equipment in the performance of maintenance functions, to include snow removal. Performs carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs to buildings, grounds, fences and equipment. Performs concrete and brick masonry demolition, repair and construction. Paints interior and exterior of buildings, rooms, walls, ceilings, and other surfaces. Hangs and tapes sheetrock, and prepares for finishes. Performs or assists with demolition and rehab projects. Makes repair to stationary and non-stationary decks, floats and wharfs. Works with custodial staff as needed to wash windows at various buildings using mechanical lifts. Responsible for the cleaning of gutters and roof tops of City buildings. Extensive knowledge using hand and bench tools and the ability and willingness to teach other proper use. Must undergo pre-employment fitness assessment, pass a federally mandated drug test. Must be able to obtain Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) certification. This position requires mandatory participation in winter operations.
Expected Hours/Schedule:
Monday
  • Friday 7:00 a.
m. to 3:30 p.m., 40 hours per week Applications accepted until May 29, 2026. Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of satisfactory criminal background and credit checks.
Salary & Benefits:
Labor and Trades Union position, Grade 51, starting $25.30/hour up to $29.34/hour, based on prior relevant work experience.
