Job Description

Job Overview Adirondack Diversity Initiative (ADI) and its host organization, Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA), are seeking motivated, community-minded individuals to serve as Visitor Use Management (VUM) Trailhead Surveyors. In this position, you will be on the front lines of meaningful research, gathering firsthand data from hikers and visitors at iconic High Peaks trailheads to better understand who is visiting, why they come, and whether they feel safe and welcome in the Adirondack Forest Preserve. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a growing body of research focused on equity, inclusion, and access in outdoor spaces. Your work will directly inform ADI's ongoing efforts to make the Adirondacks more welcoming for all. Position Details Location The Garden, Adirondack Loj, and occasionally Upper Works Trailhead Duration June-August and/or September-October 2026 Schedule Weekends, generally 7:00 AM - 12:00 PM (5 hours) Compensation $80 per day ($16/hour equivalent). This is a W-9 independent contractor position and is not eligible for ANCA employee benefits. Supervisor Melanie Reding, ADI Deputy Director Tamara Jolly, ADI Community Initiatives Manager, will provide day-to-day guidance and training Transportation Application Deadline Must have reliable personal transportation June to Aug. period due by May 31st , Sept. to Oct. due Aug. 14th Key Responsibilities Surveyors will be responsible for the following: Administer structured visitor surveys at assigned High Peaks trailheads, using a provided survey instrument Collect statistically significant samples covering visitor demographics, motivations, attitudes, and experiences Gather data on visitors' feelings of safety and belonging in the Forest Preserve Record observational data at trailheads to supplement survey responses Engage professionally and respectfully with all visitors, including those who may decline to participate Submit completed surveys and field notes according to ADI's reporting guidelines
Qualifications Required:
Comfortable approaching and engaging with strangers in an outdoor public setting Ability to work independently and remain focused over a 5-hour outdoor shift Reliable personal transportation to reach remote trailheads Comfortable working outdoors in variable weather conditions (rain, heat, cold) Preferred (not required, training provided): Familiarity with Leave No Trace (LNT) principles and basic trail stewardship Experience with survey administration, fieldwork, or community outreach Interest in conservation, equity in outdoor recreation, or environmental research How to Apply Submit your application by completing the online application form at .
