The FCEN is seeking an experienced Trainman (Railroad freight Conductor / Locomotive Engineer). The Trainman - railroad freight conductor / locomotive engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of freight trains as well as working with our customers to ensure accurate movement and placement of freight cars. Duties include reviewing schedules, throwing rail switches, maintaining shipping records and paperwork, properly distributing weight throughout the train and operating freight cars in the rail yard.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Review instructions from Customer Service Agent and discuss with locomotive engineer
  • Inspect all equipment on cars prior to departures
  • Read and understand bulletins, work orders, and switch lists
  • Assist and instruct train crews to couple and uncouple cars, operate switches, and make minor repairs to railcars, including replacing heavy couplings or air brake hoses
  • Work with customers to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars
  • Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety
  • Comprehend color and/or hand signals and systems
  • Quickly and repeatedly make precise adjustments in moving the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions
Position Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Valid state issued driver's license and a clean driving record
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must have requisite color vision and hearing acuity per FRA regulations 240/242
  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to walk long distances over uneven terrain
  • Must be able to lift up to 80 LBS occasionally
  • Work hours may include a non-standard work week, overtime, and varying shifts
  • Previous work experience in a labor intensive, outdoor-industrial environment is preferred Florida Central Railroad maintains a drug-free workplace and performs pre-employment substance abuse testing.
All positions require pre-employment background verification and physical as well. This is a FRA covered service position. No moving/relocation reimbursement is available for this position.
