POSITION
Transportation Mechanic II
REPORTS TO:
Director of Transportation

NATURE OF WORK:
An employee in this position serves at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of school buses and other automotive equipment. The employee is expected to know all established procedures of automotive care and on assignment to know completely one specialized system. Work exposes employees to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, noise, vibrations, and hazards associated with automotive maintenance work such as fumes, gases, mists, odors, and oils. Work in this class is performed under the supervision of the fleet maintenance supervisor or transportation supervisor and is evaluated as a completed service.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Identifies, diagnoses, and repairs complex Repairs and replaces equipment for compliance standards. Uses specialized power tools. Repairs damaged frames and repairs and replaces differentials, drive shafts, front end and steering mechanisms. Adjusts or replaces starters, alternators, transmissions, and engine assemblies. Repair or replace powertrain components such as diesel or gas engines and transmissions. Applies NC Inspection Laws, State DPI Inspection regulations. Makes repairs on all braking systems. Check the lighting and wiring mechanism to ensure proper functioning. Assists in fueling buses. Assists in changing tires. Assists in checking buses in and out as required. Assists in prepping and painting buses. Assists in surveying roads for safe driving conditions during inclement weather. Assists in traffic control at select NCPS district events. Assists in housekeeping duties. Performs related duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation or his/her designee.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
High degree of skill in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment. Ability to learn the uses and operation of various machines that are found in the automotive repair shop. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to make charge tickets on each job, giving part numbers, complete description, and amount of labor. Considerable knowledge of automotives.
SUGGESTED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum five years' experience and training with large class vehicle operation, maintenance and repair is preferred. Graduation from high school or GED certification.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must hold a CDL Class A License with all applicable endorsements to operate any vehicle owned by the school system. Must be able to perform work exerting over 125 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Must pass an alcohol and drug test as per USDOT, FHWA, and local school board regulations as required. Continued training for individuals will be required to maintain a bus inspection certificate by the State of North Carolina. EVALUATION
Performance in this position will be evaluated regularly by the supervisor in accordance with Board Policy.
