MISSION:
It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation.
JOB PURPOSE
A non-CDL bus driver transports passengers in vans or smaller cutaway buses following set routes and schedules, performing pre-trip vehicle inspections, maintaining passenger safety, and adhering to traffic laws. This role requires excellent customer service and communication skills, a valid driver's license, and often involves flexible shifts and various weather conditions. Responsibilities include assisting with wheelchair lifts, managing passenger discipline, keeping logs, and reporting vehicle issues to maintenance.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Safely pick up and drop off passengers at designated stops according to a set schedule. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus, checking fluid levels, lights, and operating systems. Maintain a safe and orderly environment for passengers and ensure all passengers and equipment are secure. Communicate with dispatch via two-way radio for instructions or updates and inform passengers about route information and delays. Provide passengers with information, assist them with boarding and alighting, especially those with disabilities, and maintain professional and courteous interactions. Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.
STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
A high school diploma.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to drive safely, adhere to traffic laws, and maintain awareness of road conditions. Strong oral and written communication skills to interact with passengers, dispatch, and other staff. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Ability to follow strict timetables, conduct vehicle inspections, and complete required paperwork. The capacity to handle mechanical issues, traffic disruptions, or passenger behavior calmly and effectively. This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. The employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
PREFERRED AGENCY REQUIREMENTS
Must be 21 years of age. Must have a valid drivers license. Must pass agency's defensive driving course.
