The candidate will train to provide safe, efficient, and reliable transportation services by operating various school buses to transport students to and from school and related activities, while maintaining positive relationships with transportation staff, district administrators, teachers, coaches, and community members. Training will include learning to safely operate a school bus in accordance with state and federal laws as well as Fort Bend ISD policies and procedures, transporting students along assigned routes, following schedules, and observing all traffic laws and safety regulations. The candidate will perform required pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, report any accidents, incidents, or maintenance issues promptly, and ensure the assigned vehicle remains clean, presentable, and properly fueled. Additional responsibilities include assisting with student evacuation in emergencies, supporting special education students during transport (including operating wheelchair lifts and handling specialized equipment such as restraints, wheelchairs, and car seats), and demonstrating punctuality and reliability throughout the training process. While training, the candidate may serve as a bus monitor as needed. Administrative duties include effective communication with parents, students, and administrators; completing and submitting required paperwork such as route changes, repair requests, and headcounts; and training on student discipline procedures in accordance with district policies. The candidate will also learn to read and interpret route directions and maps, attend required training sessions (including those for caring for special education students with critical needs such as tracheotomy care or other medical procedures), and participate in safety meetings and in-service trainings. Maintaining a cooperative attitude with staff and stakeholders is essential, as is learning to report student-related concerns to supervisors, adhere to Individual Education Plans (IEPs) while maintaining confidentiality, and keep accurate and updated records in the special needs bus binder, including route details and student attendance.
