POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT POSITION
Bus Driver for Summer Enrichment Program (5 positions), as-needed
LOCATION

EMPLOYMENT TERM
On an as needed basis . July 6-July 10, 2026.
  • Wages are contingent upon actually working as a bus driver for the Summer Enrichment Program.
No payment if school has to be closed due to something outside the control of Mason County Schools. Pending student participation
HOURS:
Determined by school's plan for program
SALARY:
Daily rate based upon degree and experience on current salary schedule (State & County)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent degree and classified as a Bus Operator or successful completion of all State required testing.

See Attached These positions are contingent upon Federal funding. The applicant who held this position last summer or in a previous summer may be given preference under WV Code 18-5-39.

POSITION
School Bus Operator
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR
On-site Coordinator, Director of Transportation
EMPLOYMENT TERM
On an as needed basis . See posting for dates and times. Only compensated for actual days worked.
SALARY:
Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8a, in accordance with Mason County Salary Scale commensurate with experience and education level
EVALUATION
Performance in this position will be evaluated by the immediate supervisor.
JOB SUMMARY
Operate a school bus or other school transportation vehicle, ranging in size from 15 passenger to 92 passenger, to pick up and drop off students at regularly scheduled locations safely
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Additional duties may be assigned. Perform pre/post trip inspections Learn route, including pick up and drop off locations Safely use fire extinguisher Assist and supervise students with disabilities Communicate with students, parents, school officials and supervisors Mop and clean inside and outside the vehicle Complete proper paperwork Ability to sit for long periods of time Ability to tolerate ill children and clean up form student sickness accidents Walk from the operator's seat to the rear of the bus Open all emergency exits Install snow chains on a bus Raise the hood of a conventional school bus and check oil levels and antifreeze levels Remove obstructions from wind shield and under wiper blades Adjust outside mirrors Secure a wheelchair Perform all duties outlined in WV State Board of Education Policy 4336 which is available at hhtp://wvde.state.wv.us/policies/p4336.doc
QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5; Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c; Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b; demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test) as required. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Must be at least 21 years of age Must have at least three years of driving experience as a licensed operator of any vehicle Must obtain and maintain WV CDL license with passenger and school bus endorsements Must successfully complete WV School Bus Safety Program and pass requisite online and skills tests Must be able to climb in and out of bus to check engine compartment Must maintain valid CPR and First Aid certification Must pass a physical examination from a Medical examiner as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration as well as drug and alcohol screen Must meet all requirements outlined in WV State Board of education Policy 433 which is available at http://wvde.state.wv.us/policies/p4336d.doc
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach, walk, climb, lift heavy objects, pull, push, grasp, use commercial food service equipment, talk, hear, see and use repetitive motions. The employee is required to exert moderate physical effort and stand continuously. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 40-60 pounds of materials, food supplies, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The temperature in a school kitchen can range from below 32°F in a walk-in freezer to 100°F or above near the ovens, stove, and dishwasher. Temperatures can exceed 400°F while operating ovens. The work floor surface, by the nature of this job, will be wet and slippery periodically throughout the day. Therefore, shoes with nonskid soles are recommended. The noise level in the work environment is moderate loud to loud (70-90 dB).
