Job Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of Recreation Therapeutic Recreation Programs utilize recreation to help individuals with temporary impairments, other health conditions, and disabilities to increase independence, strengthen leisure skills, and enhance personal well-being—physically, cognitively, emotionally, and socially—in a rehabilitative environment. We are looking for a full-time Messenger/Driver to drive and operate wheelchair accessible vans and to plan and prepare driving routes for all classes at the Therapeutic Recreation Center. This ensures we will continue to provide quality recreational services that enrich the lives of Norfolk's residents.
Department Hiring Salary:
$40,768.00 Essential functions include but are not limited to: Drive and operate wheelchair accessible vans and assure safety while transporting program participants to and from center activities; push wheelchairs and assist in transferring participants into van seats. Plan and prepare driving routes for all classes at the Therapeutic Recreation Center; contact program participants with pick-up times. Responsible for routine vehicle maintenance, maintaining vehicle records and scheduling vehicle maintenance, repair and cleaning. Establish and oversee systems for participant safety in vehicle including transportation request forms. Reach out to other departments to reserve loaner vehicles when vans are being serviced. Maintain office copier by setting up service appointments and ordering paper. Deliver checks to the City Treasurer and equipment to various departments. Ability to utilize a computer and related software. This position requires excellent inter-personal, communication, organizational and customer service skills and the ability to effectively interact with and contribute to the growth and development of diverse citizen groups with disabilities. Respond to emergency situations as necessary. Ability to see, hear, stand/walk, lift from ground to above shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, work in confined spaces, perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and utilize telephone communications. Requires a valid driver's license; applicants must attach copy Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency. No experience required. The preferred candidate will possess experience in transporting individuals with disabilities, vehicle maintenance and customer service.
The successful candidate will:
Be required to successfully complete a drug test and criminal background check to be considered for this position. Have a valid Driver's License CDL license (optional) CPR/First Aid Certification (optional)

Work Hours :
Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week. Occasional nights and weekends required.
