The doula will offer emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and the postpartum period.
Key Responsibilities:
Prenatal Support:
Provide one-on-one consultations to discuss birth preferences, fears, and expectations. Educate clients on pregnancy, labor, and delivery processes, ensuring accessibility and understanding. Assist with creating a birth plan and offer relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and comfort measures. Offer guidance on nutrition, exercise, and self-care during pregnancy, tailored to cultural practices.Birth Support:
Offer continuous emotional and physical support during labor and delivery at a hospital. Provide comfort measures such as massage, positioning suggestions, and breathing techniques to ease labor pain. Advocate for the client's birth plan while maintaining a calm and supportive presence, adapting to the client's needs as labor progresses. Support partners or family members in their roles during labor, fostering a collaborative environment.Postpartum Support:
Provide virtual support to new mothers, including breastfeeding assistance, newborn care education, and postpartum recovery guidance. Offer emotional support to help families adjust to parenthood, addressing postpartum mood changes or challenges. Teach infant care basics, such as bathing, diapering, and soothing techniques.Cultural Sensitivity:
Provide care that respects cultural traditions, family dynamics, and religious practices.Collaboration and Advocacy:
Work alongside midwives, obstetricians, or lactation consultants to ensure comprehensive care. Advocate for the client's preferences during prenatal appointments or in postpartum settings, if requested. Refer clients to community resources, such as support groups, as needed.Qualifications:
Completed doula training through a recognized organization (e.g., DONA International, CAPPA, or equivalent) on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Approved Training Programs List. Fluency in English for coordination with healthcare providers. Experience providing prenatal and/or postpartum support. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with diverse families. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Background check and up-to-date vaccinations (as required by local regulations).Preferred Skills:
Training in lactation support or newborn care. Familiarity with virtual doula services (e.g., Teams, Zoom, telehealth platforms). Experience supporting clients with high-risk pregnancies or postpartum mental health challenges.Work Environment:
Flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate clients' needs. Virtual support, or in-home, depending on client preferences and location. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in sensitive situations.Compensation and Benefits:
