Student Conductor Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad - 5.0 Noblesville, IN Job Details Part-time $15 an hour 7 hours ago Benefits On-the-job training Qualifications Guest relations Outdoor work Full Job Description Position Summary The Student Conductor is a seasonal, part-time operations role designed for individuals interested in learning railroad operations while supporting safe and positive guest experiences. Student Conductors work alongside experienced conductors and the operations team to assist with passenger boarding, onboard communication, safety procedures, and general train operations. This role is hands-on, safety-focused, and requires working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Key Responsibilities The Student Conductor may assist with: Safely boarding and deboarding passengers Supporting conductors with passenger communication and onboard safety Learning and following all railroad safety rules, procedures, and operating practices Assisting with train movement preparation under the direction of the conductor or operations team Communicating clearly with crew members, staff, and passengers Helping maintain a safe, calm, and organized passenger experience Monitoring passenger behavior and reporting concerns to the conductor Working outdoors in all weather conditions Walking on uneven terrain, climbing steps and ladders, and assisting with light to moderate lifting Supporting other operational duties as assigned Qualifications Ideal candidates should be: Interested in railroad operations, transportation, tourism, or guest service Reliable, punctual, and willing to learn Comfortable working around trains, tracks, and outdoor environments Able to follow directions carefully and prioritize safety Comfortable interacting with the public in a friendly and professional way Able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed Able to pass required hearing, vision, and drug testing as part of the process to become a certified conductor Willing to complete required training and certification steps as directed by NPHR Schedule Expectations Student Conductors are seasonal, part-time employees and must be available to work evenings, weekends, and special events as needed. To remain active in the program, Student Conductors are expected to work a minimum of one weekend per month, based on operational needs and scheduling availability. Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to: Stand, walk, and move for extended periods Climb steps and ladders Work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and other weather conditions Navigate uneven ground, ballast, and railroad-related surfaces Assist with light to moderate lifting as needed
