Job Type:
PartTime USNH Employees should within Workday through the Jobs Hub app Under the direct supervision of the vessel master, assist with the operation of the R/V Gulf Challenger, including all required deckhand and relief captain duties as allowed by licensing. Employee will be expected to assist with all aspects of the operation and maneuvering of the vessel as well as light dockside maintenance. Employee will be expected to abide by all USCG and UNH guidelines to ensure safe operation of the vessel as well as passenger comfort. Employee can expect to interface with a wide variety of passengers and vessel users, including researchers, students, and the general public, in varying sea and weather conditions. Employee can expect up to 20hrs/week for a period of 8-14 weeks in the summer and must have weekend availability during said period. Duties/Responsibilities Act as mate/relief captain aboard R/V Gulf Challenger (100%): Under limited supervision, perform all duties necessary of mates and/or relief captain aboard the vessel, including rigging/lifting/towing operations, vessel handling, line handling, watch standing, etc. Specific duties may be dependent on licensing and skill level. Perform routine maintenance and repairs aboard the vessel dockside as necessary. Operate deck and overboard handling equipment as needed while adhering to all applicable safety protocols. Lead and instruct other crew, passengers, and researchers aboard the vessel as necessary, including safety briefings, emergency operations, and scientific operations. Conduct vessel operations in a safe and efficient manner, adhering to all USCG and UNH policies regarding operation of vessels and conducting scientific research. Requirements Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience 2-4 years of experience in the marine industry, depending on qualifications Required Licenses & Certifications Valid drivers license CPR/First Aid- USCG accepted NASBLA- approved safe boating certification Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Familiarity with vessel operations, including twin screw and single screw vessel handling, close-quarters maneuvering, line handling, heavy weather operations, and all related skills and knowledge commensurate with operating a small passenger vessel. Familiarity with passenger management procedures Familiarity with basic hand and power tools, as well as proper PPE Experience with rigging and marlinspike seamanship Positive and enthusiastic attitude in public interactions Proficiency with basic computing tasks Leadership skills and the ability to motivate and instruct Other Requirements Pre-employment drug test Participation in random drug testing program Preferred Qualifications USCG 100-ton license and medical certificate FCC Marine Radio Operator PermitCompensation Pay Range:
