Job Description:
Are you someone who is or wants to be a commercial mariner, but doesn't want to work for a company that sees you as a number or a tool? Do you have compassion for people and want a job that directly aids people in remote locations? Are you passionate about the earth, sustainability, and supporting efforts to build community? Well Tugboat Pokagon (ex Navy YTB-836) named after Chief Leopold Pokagon of the Potawatami, needs you. If you are a 500 Ton Master of towing, or a new deckhand who wants to learn and grow as a mariner, we might be the place for you. The duties are what you'd expect of a mariner depends on the position, and probably what you are used to regardless of whether you've worked on oilfield or wind supply boats, cruise ships, tugboats, etc. keep it clean and maintain it, as well as loading and unloading of cargo, and tying up, making tow, etc. But the entire mission of Homestead Marine Services is to help coastal Alaskans, and their villages, and you can't do that without getting to know people and finding out their needs. So being willing to engage positively with people is also an important part of the job. Obviously it should go without saying that if you are the kind of person who doesn't help folks when they need it, we're probably not a good fit. Also if you have a hard time accepting other cultures and practices, this might not be the place for you as supporting the native villages is absolutely central to what we want to do. But if you enjoy helping your fellow crew, and others ashore, you'll probably be exactly who we're looking for. Positions that are available are... 500 Ton Master of Towing Able Seaman or 500 Ton Mate Ordinary Seaman or Wiper Don't delay, apply now as we're departing in less than two weeks on our first voyage with Pokagon!
