Job Description

Trident Seafoods is North America's largest vertically integrated seafood harvesting and processing company. Trident is a privately held, 100 percent USA-owned company with global operations in 6 countries and serves customers in almost 60 countries. Headquartered in Seattle, Washington (USA), Trident employs approximately 7,700 people worldwide each year and partners with over 2,700 independent fishermen and crewmembers in Alaska. Trident catches and processes virtually every commercial species of salmon, whitefish, and crab harvested in the North Pacific and Alaska. The global supply chain also encompasses cultured and wild species sourced from an international network of trusted suppliers.
Summary:
Overall in command of the vessel. Directs and oversees the activities of the vessel senior crew; including deck, engineering, production and safety. Responsible for all navigation and primary vessel activity which can include fishing, processing or hauling freight. Works direct with Corporate or fleet manager to plan and implement vessel movements and operations.
Essential Functions:
(Responsibilities, Tasks, Supervisory Needs) Directs and oversees the pre-season and day-to-day operations of the vessel. Responsible for operating the vessel in accordance with Trident policy, local, state and federal laws and regulations. Works with Fleet Manager to assist with capital projects (e.g. drydocking, installation and repair projects, major purchases) including the scheduling, budgeting and compliance with license, permit and other applicable codes and regulations. Oversees and establishes the performance and operation standards for all vessel deck and navigation systems. Resolves problems using solutions that involve appropriate techniques, technologies, or concepts. Directs and oversees required documentation for the primary vessel functions. Analyzes human resources needs to assist with short- and long-term projects. Must be able to give specific directions in the case of an emergency. This can include launching a raft, donning an Immersion suit or life preserver, and/or assisting in a response to fire or flooding. Oversees the design and implementation of training to ensure that all vessel deck and engineering staff are properly trained, qualified and in compliance with regulatory training and/or regulatory certification requirements. Must be able to train crew to safely operate or work with cranes, hooks, anchor winches, slings, and other lifting devices. Assists in directing and overseeing launching, retrieval, operation and maintenance of a skiff. Advises management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs, and/or inter-departmental relations. Provides directions and examples for interpretation and application of company policies and procedures to the engineering activities. Analyzes and maintains a working knowledge of new technologies which may improve operations and develops recommendations accordingly. Maintains a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner. The essential functions listed above are not exhaustive. Required Qualifications:
(Education, Years of Experience, Certifications) Must have at least 2 years of experience as Captain onboard a mid-water trawl vessel. Advanced firefighting skills. Advanced navigation and communication skills. Ability to conduct safety drills for crew and guests. Ability to manage the medical/first aid needs of the vessel. Appropriate licenses/permits of trade when required. Current First Aid and CPR cards.
Preferred Education & Experiences:
Extensive seafood of related industry experience preferred; Four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Able to work/communicate with Claims and HR departments to monitor crew needs/issues. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Familiarity with state and federal regulations that apply to the vessel being applied for. Familiarity with production needs and willingness to work with others to support production needs.
Work environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Work Ability Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and peripheral vision. Work Authorizations This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.
