Job Description

Local Truck Driver 14223 Kenai Spur Highway, Kenai, AK 99611 From $33 an hour - Full-time From $33 an hour -
Full-time Summary:
Drives tractor-trailer to transport vans, tankers, flatbeds, lowboys, reefers, etc., on public roads or highways, from various locations to the customer(s).
Essential Functions:
  • Drives truck to destination, applying knowledge of commercial driving regulations and observing all traffic laws and safety regulations.
  • Maintain truck log, according to state and federal regulations.
  • Inspects truck for defects before and after trips and reports any discrepancies indicating truck condition to the dispatcher or shop foreman.
  • Maneuvers trailers in and around tight corners, through manufacturing areas and around high pedestrian traffic.
  • Obtain shipping bills of lading and necessary signatures and returns completed paper work with timesheet daily.
  • Maintain telephone or radio contact with dispatcher to receive delivery instructions.
  • May perform emergency roadside repairs, brake adjustments, and install tire chains.
  • May drive tractor with two trailers hitched in tandem.
  • May perform hot oil and fuel loading at the refinery; propane and mineral oil loading at the yard.
  • Uses proper equipment for loading/unloading of freight to prevent damage to product or injury from strain.
  • Must observe state and city speed and safety regulations as well as company customer service and safety policies.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by dispatchers.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Must be able to drop and spot trailers on varied terrains.
  • Requires high degree of attention and considerable dexterity in the control of tractor-trailer and in preventing damage to materials and tractor-trailer equipment.
  • Must be able to back trailers in and out of receiving docks as well as service bays in the shop.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to quickly and accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Tact and diplomacy required in dealing with customer personnel at delivery points.
  • Must pass substance abuse screening (as a safety sensitive employee subject to random substance abuse screening under company policy)
  • Must have the ability to work independently; pay attention to minute details; be organized with ability to prioritize and complete tasks; bring energy to the position and be internally inspired using his or her initiative; be punctual and dependable.
  • Ability to successfully complete a company logbook and demonstrate basic math skills.
Qualifications:
Required:
  • Driver is 21 years or older for Interstate (Can be 18 but operate Intrastate Only - No Hazmat) — FMCSR Part 391.11 (b) (1)
  • Read and speak English sufficiently to converse with general public and comprehend DOT and OSHA regulations — FMCSR Part 391.11 (b) (2)
  • No serious moving violation (excessive speeding over 15 mph) or DUI in the previous 5 years
  • Three plus year winter driving experience in a tractor trailer Certificates, Licenses, Registration
  • Valid Alaska Class A CDL
  • Hazmat endorsement (X) if over age 21
  • Valid medical card — FMCSR Part 391.

  • Tanker/chemical experience
  • Doubles/triples (T) endorsement / Long Combination Vehicle (LCV) Certification
