Transit Driver Job Description:
The incumbent under the direction of the Driver Supervisor provides the residents of Fort Smith with reliable, economical, efficient and safe transportation around the City of Fort Smith. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Note:
All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times. 1. Drives a passenger bus on an assigned route or paratransit service, collects fares and passes, serves as a driver on local government and public relations trips as required. 2. Provides information to passengers including bus schedules and routes, assists passengers in determining how to access desired destinations. 3. Makes provision for daily maintenance on vehicles and spot cleans interior and exterior of the bus. 4. Operates a wheelchair lift and provides reasonable boarding assistance to the passengers as needed. 5. Ensures passenger safety by enforcing rules of conduct and operation, checks bus for lost items and reports same. 6. Performs visual inspection and operational safety check of assigned vehicle daily, monitors equipment for problems requiring attention, reports repair needs, reports traffic hazards, accidents, and other conditions requiring attention. 7. Completes daily report forms via email by recording mileage, passengers, and other information through the use of iPads. 8. Monitors cleanliness of transit amenities, bus stop signs and electronic messaging and reports conditions needing attention. 9. Practices continuous learning through individual study, classroom training and occasional seminars. 10. Performs work safely in accordance with department safety procedures, operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work condition or practice to the driver supervisor. 11. Represents the department and city in a professional manner when serving the public. 12. Provides professional radio communications. 13. Maintain professional contact with passengers while keeping a personal distance. 14. May be required to report to work to serve customers during emergency conditions. May be assigned to report at a different time and location to perform different duties as necessary. 15. Delivers fare box to transit office as required. 16. Performs related work as required. 17. Regular attendance and timeliness is required.
Qualification Requirements:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Experience:
High school diploma or G.E.D. is required. Must hold a Class "B" CDL with air brakes and passenger endorsement and a DOT Medical Certificate or be able to obtain one. A minimum of two week training period to familiarize new employees with their route, paperwork, disability procedures, etc.
Other Skills and Abilities:
The incumbent should possess good verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Must be proficient in proper radio terms and be familiar with city roads. Emergency procedures, first aid and CPR training is also required.
POSITION DESIGNATIONS
This position is designated as essential during inclement weather events. City services will be maintained during inclement weather, such as heavy snow or ice storms and all essential employees are expected to report to work due to the critical functions of the position. This position is not able to work remotely. This position does have the potential to drive as part of their regular job duties. This position is designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is subject to random DOT drug and alcohol screenings and/or non-DOT drug and alcohol screenings (a safety/security sensitive position is one in which a momentary lapse in attention may result in injury or death of another person).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently sit; use hands to handle objects and reach with hands and arms and talk. Occasionally the employee is required to stand and walk. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, peripheral, and distance vision. The ability to adjust focus and depth perception is also required. The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is occasionally required to work in wet, humid conditions; work near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is also exposed to outdoor weather conditions and is at risk of electrical shock and vibration. Employee must also recognize potential hazards within the work area to ensure safe work environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
