This position plays a critical role in ensuring materials are safely loaded, unloaded, stored, and delivered to production areas to keep projects moving efficiently. The ideal candidate will have forklift experience, strong safety awareness, and the ability to work in a fast-paced industrial environment handling large steel components. Job Summary The Yard Operator is responsible for operating forklifts up to 50 tons and ensuring the safe loading, unloading, movement, and storage of materials for shipment and fabrication. This position reports directly to the Yard Manager, Shop Superintendent, and Shop Foreman. Essential Responsibilities Operate forklifts and material handling equipment safely and efficiently Load and unload steel materials from incoming and outgoing trucks Verify all loads against shipping tickets and Bills of Lading (BOL) Inspect loads to ensure materials are secured and transported safely Move raw materials and finished products throughout the facility Deliver materials to production workstations as needed Perform daily equipment inspections and report maintenance concerns Maintain compliance with company safety policies and OSHA regulations Assist with inventory organization, storage, and yard housekeeping Communicate any material shortages, damages, or discrepancies to management Support daily shop production needs and additional operational tasks as assigned Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required Previous forklift, yard, warehouse, or steel industry experience preferred Ability to safely maneuver large, heavy, and irregularly shaped steel products Must be able to drive a manual transmission (stick shift) Strong attention to detail and safety procedures Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment Team-oriented with a positive attitude and strong work ethic Excellent communication skills Preferred Experience Rigging experience Crane operation experience Knowledge of crane hand signals Structural steel fabrication or steel yard experience What We're Looking For Safety-first mindset Reliable attendance and punctuality Ability to work effectively with production, shipping, and management teams Strong problem-solving skills Willingness to assist wherever needed to support operations Benefits & Perks Weekly pay every Friday Stable, full-time employment Opportunity to work with a growing steel fabrication company Safety-focused work environment Career advancement opportunities Work Environment This position requires working outdoors and indoors in a steel fabrication and manufacturing environment.
