Performs semiskilled work in the operation and maintenance of the Chatham County Collection Centers including verifying decals for use of centers, inspecting, directing, and managing items for correct placement, operating equipment, communicating information to users, and performing related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Collection Center Supervisor(s) with the ability to exercise independent judgment within the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in the operations of the collection centers. Operating the Collection Centers including opening, closing, keeping clean, operating equipment, and following all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; Checking decals to ensure the visitor is eligible to use the center; providing information to those who cannot use the centers; Properly managing containers- inspecting loads, enforcing limits, directing to correct containers, and removing items that were incorrectly placed; Communicating clearly with visitors about proper disposal, policies, rules, etc.; answering questions about all Solid Waste & Recycling services; and providing excellent customer service with a positive attitude and professional demeanor; Monitoring and controlling traffic on-site; Adhering to the departmental safety rules and regulations, and using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); ensuring the safety of self, visitors, contractors, and other employees; Responsible for operating and maintaining equipment to compact garbage, performing light custodial work, cleaning areas around and under containers, and picking up trash and litter around the site and Completing required paperwork properly, communicating information to the appropriate staff person, and reporting any issues; Assists co-workers and other departments as necessary; Attends training as needed and Performs other duties as assigned. High school diploma or GED. Ability to perform manual work in varying weather conditions; Ability to stand for long periods of time and repeatedly bend and reach; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing; Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time as required by work assignments; Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with the general public; Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with the general public, management, and co-workers and Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. Physical Requirements This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking, hearing and use of hands and fingers, handling or feeling, frequently requires standing, walking, climbing, balancing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing, pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visually inspecting small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic). Special Requirements Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license and/or reliable transportation.
