All duties assigned to this position must be performed accurately, efficiently, in accordance with applicable State and Borough laws and the requirements of Jenkintown Borough. The Borough of Jenkintown requires a Public Works Driver/Laborer that is an energetic individual for an integral role in the Borough of Jenkintown Public Works Department. The employee in this position will be expected to produce exceptional work and meet the highest standards in a positive, supportive work environment.
OVERVIEW
The goal of this position is to assist the Public Works Foreman in all aspects of the Borough's maintenance of parks, facilities, and roadways. In this position, a person is expected to participate in formal and informal training sessions provided by Borough Organizations and Professionals in order to broaden their understanding of public works operations and roadways. This position requires a self-starter who can work under a minimum of direction and achieve defined results. Organization, exceptional communication skills and maintaining a professional attitude are essential. Daily interaction with the Borough Manager, Finance Director, Staff, Elected Officials, and the Public requires a courteous and friendly personality, while maintaining a respect for the confidential nature of municipal government.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPOSIBILITIES
- Work as part of a team to maintain Borough facilities and green spaces on a daily basis under the supervision of the Public Works Foreman.
- Perform bulk item collection, bulk street leaf collection, routine parks/facilities maintenance, street/traffic light maintenance, and stormwater maintenance.
- The Jenkintown Borough Public Works Department maintains approximately 10 miles of local roadways, including snow removal, and provides additional services at State-owned roads.
- The Department is responsible for multiple parks and green spaces around the Borough and weekly curbside yard waste collections.
- The Department maintains Borough-owned facilities, including Borough Hall, Police Station, services streetlights, and traffic signals, inspects, cleans and repairs stormwater infrastructure.
- Maintain a professional, helpful can-do attitude at all times while conducting Borough business.
- Attend and participate in formal and informal training on Borough specific Municipal Government training.
- Attend and participate in administrative staff meetings, safety meetings and other meetings as assigned.
- The duties and responsibilities listed above may be expanded upon and adjusted as needed.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License with class B CDL (minimum) with air brake restriction removed. Must be able to satisfactorily pass criminal background check, motor vehicle check, and drug test. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and work in awkward or confined positions for extended periods. The employee must be able to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally more with assistance. The employee must be able to operate motorized and powered tools, heavy vehicles, and equipment requiring sustained physical effort. The employee will be exposed to all weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain, ice, and snow, and must be able to perform snow removal and other physically demanding outdoor tasks in those conditions. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus necessary for safe operation of vehicles and equipment. The employee must have sufficient physical endurance to perform manual labor tasks including shoveling, raking, hauling, and lifting throughout a standard workday. Preferred candidate will have experience in basic facilities maintenance, carpentry, paving, concrete work, landscaping knowledge and the safe operation of motorized / powered tools.
