Food Service Driver/Seasonal Maintenance, District

DEFINITION

This is a dual-role position. The employee serves in a food service support role during the school year and transitions to a maintenance and grounds role during summer months. During the school year (approximately 9.5 months), the position is responsible for transporting food, supplies, and equipment for the school nutrition program, along with maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in kitchen and storage areas. During summer months (approximately 2.5 months), the position supports the Buildings and Grounds Department with light maintenance and grounds duties.

SUPERVISION

This position reports to the Food Service Director, Buildings and Grounds Director, and/or Kitchen Managers depending on assigned duties and time of year.

School year:

Food Service Director and Kitchen Managers.

Summer:

Buildings and Grounds Director. When duties overlap, direction is provided by the supervisor responsible for the primary function being performed.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Safe operation of delivery vehicle. Ability to organize deliveries and meet meal schedules. Knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards or willingness to learn. Ability to perform basic mechanical and maintenance tasks (seasonal). Strong organization, communication, and teamwork skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Valid South Dakota driver's license required. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Completion of district training and probationary period required. Prior experience in food service, custodial work, maintenance, or grounds preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift and carry 40-55 lbs regularly. Frequent bending, lifting, pushing, and standing. Ability to work in kitchens, freezers, and outdoor environments.

SCHOOL YEAR DUTIES

(9.5 MONTHS): Transport food, milk, supplies, and equipment to satellite sites. Load and unload delivery vehicle daily. Deliver meals and supplies on schedule. Prepare and clean cafeteria areas. Monitor milk coolers and food temperatures. Assist students during meal service. Maintain breakfast stock at Jefferson Elementary School and Buchanan Elementary School. Sweep and mop serving areas. Prepare milk orders and deliver commodities. Report maintenance issues.

SUMMER DUTIES

(2.5 MONTHS): Oil changes on mowers, weed eaters, and small engines. Sharpen mower blades and maintain equipment. Assist with irrigation systems. Mowing and general grounds maintenance. Support Buildings and Grounds staff as assigned.

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS

Maintain professionalism with staff, students, and public. Follow safety and sanitation procedures. Communicate issues promptly. Perform additional duties as assigned. Ability to handle the public in a friendly and courteous manner, and the ability to favorably influence the public's image of the school. Positions are open until filled. EOE.
