DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The Solid Waste Driver II is responsible for operating a refuse vehicle. Incumbent performs the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment and performs various manual labor tasks. Employees in this class may perform the duties required of Solid Waste Driver I on a temporary basis as needed. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Sanitation Superintendent and is evaluated by the care exercised in the operation and maintenance of equipment and the completeness and efficiency with which assignments are performed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list is not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all functions, responsibilities, skills, and abilities. Additional functions and requirements may be assigned by supervisors as deemed appropriate. Operates refuse vehicles (commercial, residential, and tractor trailer) for the transport of solid waste. Conducts pre-occupation inspections of equipment, identifies equipment problems and reports problems for repairs. Performs routine preventative maintenance on various landfill equipment. Completes daily schedules in allotted time. Employees in this class may perform the duties required of Solid Waste Driver I on a temporary basis as needed. Observes all safety regulations and communicates potential safety hazards. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. Will assist the different divisions within sanitation. Performs other duties as assigned. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential function of this position, as is the ability to create and maintain professional, harmonious working relationships with others.
Additional Requirements:
This classification requires the use of City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED & EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Sanitation Superintendent.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Knowledge of:
The operation and maintenance requirements of refuse vehicles, heavy equipment and tractor trailer combinations. Safety procedures and practices in the operation and maintenance of heavy and various equipment. Applicable traffic laws, ordinances and regulations. The hazards and safety rules and precautions of operating heavy equipment and tractor trailer combinations.
Ability to:
Operate heavy equipment used in solid waste transportation. Operates other equipment as needed for the proper collection and disposal of solid waste, brush and debris. Read and follow route maps. Understand and follow written and oral instructions in the English language. Work independently in the performance of duties. Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public. Work safely without presenting a direct threat to the incumbent or others. Clean equipment using appropriate materials.
Education & Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent; or six (6) months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses, Certificates & Registrations:
Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License, Class "A".
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to handle and feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb. The employee is occasionally required to balance; stoop; kneel; crouch and crawl; and lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and moving vehicle traffic. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
SAFETY SENSITIVITY
