DESCRIPTION
The Driver I for the Street Department plays a critical role in supporting street maintenance and operational activities by operating specialized vehicles, ensuring safe transportation of materials and crew members to designated work sites, and contributing to a thriving and efficient city infrastructure.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) Class B is required, with a clean driving record. Previous experience operating heavy vehicles and equipment, preferably in a municipal or construction environment.is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of safe driving practices, traffic laws, and regulations governing the operation of commercial vehicles. Skills in effective communication to interact professionally with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and members of the public. Skills in operating large vehicles safely within public areas and tight spaces to ensure the safety of passengers, pedestrians, and surrounding property. Ability to perform routine vehicle inspections and basic maintenance tasks, such as checking fluids, tire pressure, and brakes. Ability to perform physical tasks in various weather conditions and environments.
MAJOR DUTIES
Operate heavy vehicles, such as dump trucks, flatbed trucks, and utility trucks, to transport materials, equipment, and personnel to and from work sites within the city. Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles to ensure safety and compliance with maintenance standards, reporting any issues or defects to supervisors for repair. Load and unload materials, equipment, and supplies onto vehicles using appropriate methods and equipment, such as forklifts, cranes, or manual labor, ensuring secure placement and balanced distribution. Transport construction materials, asphalt, gravel, dirt, and other supplies to work sites according to project requirements and specifications. Assist in street maintenance and repair tasks, such as pothole patching, crack sealing, pavement marking, and debris removal, as directed by supervisors. Operate equipment and tools, such as jackhammers, saws, and shovels, to assist in construction and maintenance activities as needed. Follow established routes and schedules to ensure timely delivery of materials and completion of assigned tasks, while adhering to traffic laws and safety regulations. Record and document all materials utilized during projects by maintaining detailed paperwork and supply tickets, ensuring accurate tracking of quantities used to assist the supervisor in managing inventory and procurement needs effectively. Maintain accurate records of vehicle mileage, fuel consumption, and maintenance activities, submitting reports as required by departmental policies and procedures. Adhere to safety protocols, procedures, and regulations to ensure a safe working environment for oneself and others, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with traffic control measures.
