The City of San Ramon is recruiting for a fulltime Traffic Signals Maintenance Specialist. Under supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled troubleshooting, maintenance, modification, and repair work in assigned maintenance operations areas such as lighting, facilities, service centers, traffic signals, and streets and drainage; maintains complex systems and performs specialized work on systems and facilities such as traffic signals, street lighting systems, and electrical systems; and performs related work as required. T he Ideal Candidate will be skilled in the following: Electrical Knowledge- will have a strong understanding of electricity including electrical circuits, power distribution, components, control systems, and troubleshooting techniques. Traffic Signal Systems
- Expertise in traffic signal hardware, software, and communication protocols. Computer Skills
- Proficiency in industrial-related software, traffic signal timing platforms, data analysis tools, and basic programming or configuration of controllers and monitoring systems. Including Microsoft programs (Excel, Word, Outlook) and Geographic Information System (GIS) applications. Diagnostic Tools
- Skilled in the use of diagnostic tools such as voltmeters, ammeters, multimeters, megohmmeters to identify issues and troubleshoot. Problem-Solving

- has experience in traffic signal maintenance, construction, or related fields. Field Experience
- has hands-on experience working in the field, including installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signals. streetlighting and communications. Troubleshooting Experience
- has experience troubleshooting complex technical issues related to traffic signals; and Safety Awareness
- Strong commitment to safety practices, including traffic control, electrical safety, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of:
Principles, practices, tools, and materials for assigned maintenance operations areas such as parks, landscape and lighting, facilities, service center, traffic signals, and streets/drainage; traffic control procedures and traffic sign regulations; the operation and minor maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and light to heavy power equipment; operational characteristics of specialized public works maintenance and repair equipment; occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work; applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility; basic mathematics; safe driving rules and practices; modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and basic software; principles and procedures of record-keeping and reporting; and techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.Ability to:
Perform skilled construction, modification, maintenance, and repair work on assigned municipal infrastructure, facilities, systems, and/or appurtenances; operate specialized construction and maintenance, light to heavy vehicles and equipment; set up and operate traffic area construction zones, including cones, barricades, and flagging; troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine materials and supplies required for repair; read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, maps, and specifications; safely and effectively use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, and equipment required for the work; perform routine equipment maintenance; maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed; follow department policies and procedures related to assigned duties; understand and follow oral and written instructions; make accurate arithmetic calculations; organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines; use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone or radio, and in writing; use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines; and establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Minimum Qualifications Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Education Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. And Experience Three (3) years of semi-skilled maintenance work experience. Licenses and Certifications Must possess and maintain a valid California class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. At the option of the City, persons hired into this class may be required to either possess at entry or obtain within specified time limits designated licenses, certifications or specialized education and training relevant to the area of assignment.When assigned to signals position:
Have a minimum of three (3) years' experience in maintenance, construction, and/or repair of traffic signals and roadway righting systems. Completion of college level coursework and/or certification in electricity, electronics, by an accredited organization or agency. Possess, and maintain, IMSA Roadway Lighting Technician Level I certification, or equivalent. Possess, and maintain, IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician Level I certification, or equivalent. Possess IMSA Signs & Pavement Markings Technician I certification, and have experience installing roadway signs. Possess, and maintain, IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control certification, or equivalent. Demonstrate the ability to install and troubleshoot communication networks, including fiber-optic and interconnect systems, and network switch equipment.ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Physical Demands Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment. Environmental Elements Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Working Conditions May be required to be on-call and to work various shifts or emergencies on evenings, weekends, and holidays.
