Job Description

Under general supervision, is responsible for the day-to-day field maintenance of equipment belonging to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Traffic Management Center (TMC). Responsible for deployment, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of TMC field equipment. Within the Traffic Management Center, utilize various communications systems to monitor traffic operations and initiate appropriate actions to alleviate traffic problems. When designated or requested, responds to requests for roadway assistance from the public and provides traffic incident information to the Communications Center personnel and the Emergency Management Division personnel as appropriate. Essential Duties and Responsibilities 1. Schedules and performs routine and emergency maintenance of field equipment. 2. Maintains accurate maintenance records of field equipment. 3. Responsible for maintaining proficiency and training in maintenance and troubleshooting on all Traffic Management field equipment. 4. Responsible for ensuring work objectives, quality standards, and compliance with all policies are met. 5. Reports equipment problems to the responsible person. 6. Assists motorists experiencing minor vehicular difficulties along the roadway through the use of the Sheriff's Office Emergency Roadside Assistance Program. 7. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, public broadcast messages, or other documents. 8. Participates in on-the-job training involving traffic management operations, incident handling procedures, interaction with emergency agencies, standard operating procedures for related agencies, operation of electronic equipment, troubleshooting of equipment, geographical layout of the county, and other related topics. 9. Monitors real-time traffic data using closed-circuit cameras, County two-way radios, or other equipment, to detect and verify highway congestion and/or incidents. 10. Operates and monitors components of Intelligent Traffic Systems. Operates/monitors Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) and Highway Advisory Radio (HAR), utilizes pre determined messages, and creates special messages as required. 11. Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, County officials, public safety agencies, emergency management personnel, law enforcement personnel, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. 12. Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable guidelines, policies, and procedures. Reads professional literature, attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate. 13. Provides staff coverage of the Traffic Emergency Center when activated due to an emergency. 14. Operates computer systems, modems, radio communications systems, closed-circuit cameras, traffic detectors, telephones, message signs, general office equipment, or other equipment necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, computer-aided dispatch (CAD), e-mail, Internet, or other computer programs. Minimum Training and Qualifications High school diploma or GED with general computer knowledge supplemented by previous experience in customer interaction, personal computer operations, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Experience in electrical components and wiring is preferred, with the knowledge and experience to diagnose minor motor vehicle malfunctions associated with stranded motorists. Must have a valid South Carolina driver's license at the time of appointment with no suspensions within the past 5 years. No criminal convictions. Must qualify and maintain a security clearance from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. At the time of appointment, the candidate must be a registered voter of Beaufort County. Minimum Qualifications Required to Perform Essential Functions of the
Position Physical Requirements:
Must be physically able to operate equipment such as an automobile, office equipment, radio, telephone, generators, and field-related equipment. Must be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds.
Language Ability:
Requires the ability to read and comprehend a variety of books, maps, policies and procedures, equipment manuals, training manuals, etc., and to prepare detailed reports and correspondence using correct punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
Intelligence:
Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, make independent judgments in the absence of supervision, and acquire knowledge of topics related to the primary occupation.
Verbal Aptitude :
Requires the ability to record and deliver information. Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse people of varying educational backgrounds.
Interpersonal Personality:
Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress or when confronted with emergencies or other critical situations.
Quality of Work:
Maintains an acceptable standard of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities, with the ability to take immediate corrective action for any deficiencies that may occur. Maintain a high quality of communication and interaction with internal and external entities.
Quantity of Work:
Performs described essential functions and related assignments efficiently and effectively to produce a quantity of work that consistently meets all standards and expectations.
Dependability:
Assumes responsibility for completing all work. Complete all assigned work within deadlines in accordance with agency directives, policy, standards, and procedures.
