Job Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of Transportation oversees transportation programs including traffic operations, roadway safety, and support for multi-modal systems. The Engineering Division performs traffic studies, maintains traffic control devices, and supports engineering projects to improve mobility and safety. The Engineering Technician II performs technical field and office work including performing field inspections, conducting traffic studies, preparing work orders for traffic control and pedestrian safety devices, reviewing construction drawings, recording and maintaining digital drawings, preparing graphics, coordinating with contractors, and analyzing data to ensure validity. Conducts field investigations, including traffic condition surveys, and recommends solutions to citizen requests. Schedules traffic studies and prepares work orders for repairs, maintenance, and changes to traffic control and pedestrian safety devices. Reads and interprets construction drawings, as builts, utility records, blueprints, and traffic control plans. Coordinates daily assignments to assess field assets and schedules meetings as needed. Provides technical supervision and guidance on traffic control devices to other technicians and installation team members. Investigates and evaluates problems revealed by citizen complaints or field inspections and formulates solutions. Manages engineering projects, including designing or overseeing design, generating cost estimates, formulating timelines, and monitoring project progress. Performs site inspections, documents findings, coordinates with contractors and the public, and reviews sites for compliance with standards. Maintains files, records, digital drawings, intersection sheets, and creates records from as built construction drawings. Prepares graphics for public notification, assists in cost projections, and performs data analysis to ensure validity of information. Understands factors affecting traffic conditions, including lighting and sign/marking visibility, to assess effectiveness of devices. Requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Requires knowledge of traffic control devices, installation practices, inspection practices, and documentation standards. Reviews construction and traffic control plans and coordinates with Project Manager to ensure compliance and contractor performance. Uses Microsoft Office Suite programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Required:
One (1) year of experience in drafting, sub-professional engineering, or related work. Work requires knowledge from six months of advanced study or equivalent experience. Valid Driver's License required.
Work Schedule:
M-F, 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and as needed
