Job Description
Railcar Repair Technician Position Summary The Railcar Repair Technician plays a key role in keeping freight railcars safe, compliant, and ready for service. This position is responsible for inspecting railcars, identifying mechanical issues, and performing minor repairs while cars are in service or on short dwell time. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, mechanically skilled, and comfortable working in a fast-paced rail environment while ensuring compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Association of American Railroads (AAR), and company standards. Key Responsibilities Perform visual and hands-on inspections of freight railcars to identify mechanical defects, wear, or damage. Complete minor running repairs, including replacing brake shoes, adjusting rigging, repairing safety appliances, and replacing gaskets or fittings. Identify and document defects in accordance with FRA and AAR regulations. Determine whether railcars are safe to remain in service or need to be bad ordered. Complete required inspection reports, repair records, and defect documentation accurately and on time. Safely operate tools and equipment such as impact wrenches, hydraulic jacks, grinders, and torches. Coordinate with yardmasters, dispatchers, and other railroad personnel to support railcar movement and repair access. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. Inspect tools and equipment regularly to ensure they remain in proper working condition. Follow all safety procedures, company policies, and regulatory requirements, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and Lockout/Tagout procedures when required. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Previous experience in mechanical railcar repair or inspection preferred. Basic understanding of FRA and AAR inspection and repair requirements. Ability to safely use hand tools and power tools. Ability to read and interpret work orders, repair manuals, and regulatory standards. Strong attention to detail and situational awareness. Effective communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. Ability to successfully complete all required safety and regulatory training.
