[Day / Night / Rotating] Job Description Quality Rail Service (QRS) is seeking an experienced and motivated Railcar Mechanic / Freight Car Repairman to join our growing operation. This position involves the inspection, repair, fabrication, and maintenance of freight railcars in accordance with the AAR Field Manual of Interchange Rules, FRA regulations, and customer requirements . The ideal candidate is self-driven , mechanically inclined, and capable of learning procedures, rules, and repairs independently while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and productivity. Key Responsibilities Perform freight car repairs in accordance with AAR Field Manual rules and FRA regulations Conduct inbound/outbound inspections , running repairs, and bad-order repairs Perform welding and fabrication repairs including structural components, brackets, safety appliances, and minor steel fabrication as permitted by AAR rules Repair and replace components including (but not limited to): Brake systems (AB/ABD/ABDW, valves, piping, hoses) Couplers, draft gear, yokes, and knuckles Wheels, trucks, center plates, and bearings Safety appliances (ladders, handholds, platforms) Accurately document repairs, defects, and work performed Follow AAR job codes , "why-made" codes, and shop procedures Maintain compliance with M-1003 quality requirements Work safely in an active rail yard or shop environment Communicate effectively with supervisors, inspectors, and team members "Standard hours are Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM-3:30 PM; however, candidates must be willing to work overtime, extended hours, and occasional weekends as needed to meet production requirements Required Qualifications Prior experience as a Railcar Mechanic / Carman / Freight Car Repairman preferred Working knowledge of AAR Field Manual rules and FRA regulations Welding and fabrication experience (stick, MIG, or FCAW) in an industrial or rail environment preferred Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and repair standards Mechanical aptitude with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment Must supply own basic hand tools required to perform railcar repairs Must have the ability to self-learn, take initiative, and start tasks independently Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions Ability to lift, climb, bend, and perform physical labor safely Strong attention to detail and safety compliance Preferred (But Not Required) AWS welding certifications (AWS D15.1 and/or D1.1) Railcar structural welding or fabrication experience Mobile repair or field service experience Familiarity with Railinc / RRA billing environments What We Offer Competitive hourly pay (based on experience) Overtime opportunities Stable, long-term employment Opportunity to grow within a professional rail service organization Safety-focused and compliance-driven work environment About Quality Rail Service Quality Rail Service is a professional railcar inspection and repair company committed to AAR compliance, FRA safety, and high-quality workmanship .
