Job Description

Locomotive Engineer 110 Railroad Street, Hood River, OR 97031 From $30 an hour - Full-time From $30 an hour - Full-time Overview We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Locomotive Engineer to operate freight and/or passenger trains across various routes. The ideal candidate will have experience with locomotive operation, understand railroad safety protocols, and possess excellent communication and problem-solving skills. You will be responsible for the safe, timely, and efficient operation of trains in accordance with company procedures and federal regulations. We are a tourist and freight operating railroad and Saturdays are required. Responsibilities 1. Train Operation Operate diesel or electric locomotives to move trains between stations or freight yards. Monitor controls, gauges, and signals to ensure smooth and safe movement. Adjust speed based on track conditions, schedules, and instructions. 2. Compliance with Safety and Operational Regulations Follow all Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) rules and company policies. Observe speed limits, signal systems, and operational orders. Ensure train movements follow authorized routes and procedures. 3. Communication and Coordination Communicate with dispatchers, conductors, and other crew members to coordinate train movement. Report delays, mechanical problems, or emergency situations. Use radios and signal systems to stay informed of track status and traffic. 4. Inspection and Troubleshooting Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the locomotive. Check brakes, gauges, fuel levels, and mechanical systems before departure. Identify and report any malfunctions or irregularities to maintenance personnel. 5. Recordkeeping and Documentation Maintain accurate logs of train movements, incidents, fuel usage, and inspections. Document any mechanical issues, safety concerns, or unusual events during the trip. 6. Emergency Response React appropriately to unexpected hazards such as vehicles on tracks, mechanical failures, or weather conditions. Safely stop the train in case of emergencies and assist with evacuation or containment if necessary. 7. Environmental Awareness Operate the locomotive in a fuel-efficient and environmentally conscious manner. Follow protocols to minimize noise, emissions, and spills. Experience Proven experience in an engineering role with a focus on mechanical systems. Strong mechanical knowledge, particularly related to heavy equipment operation. Familiarity with air brake systems is highly desirable. Experience in troubleshooting and problem-solving within an engineering context. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
