Job Description
Job Overview:
The Carman will work with the other car shop members to maintain, oversee, assist in the repair of and troubleshoot issues pertaining to the RBMN railcar fleet.Responsibilities and Duties:
- Read and interpret schematics, blueprints and other written instructions and diagrams to perform tasks at hand.
- Perform MIG, Stick and other types of welds based on project needs.
- Use Oxygen & Acetylene torches Field install welds, metal sheeting, and other parts (air portions, couplers, pins, etc.).
- Select proper fillers for jobs based on previous experience or project instructions.
- Coordinate with Director for installation instructions.
- De-bur and grind metal as necessary to achieve proper surface texture.
- Identify and issue with railcars, such as mechanical or damage.
- Repair or replace components as necessary, ensuring the safe operation of the railcar.
- Lubricate and clean parts to maintain proper function.
- Paint railcars to specific color to meet RBMN standards.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, railroad rules, and standards set by the RBMN.
- Other duties as assigned. Qualifications
- Ability to work around loud machines and equipment.
- Ability to work alone or in mixed groups.
- Ability to work in all kinds of weather conditions.
- Must be able to lift to, but not limited to, 80lbs.
- Ability to conduct work bending, standing, kneeling, climbing, lying down or sitting for long periods.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to both superiors and subordinates.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Finger dexterity, operation of motor vehicle, operation of equipment, manage multiple tasks/projects, close attention to detail and adapt to ever changing work environment.
- Valid driver's license.
- Successfully complete an FRA-mandated background check, pre-employment drug screening and ongoing random drug screens.
- Possess a working mobile phone to utilize as needed.
- Operational vehicle to commute to/from work.
- Positive attitude.
- Open-mindedness to rapid change and discussion of various ways to execute projects.
- Exposure to chemicals, noise, dust, and heights.
