PRIMARY PURPOSE
Perform daily vehicle repair and maintenance activities to ensure proper performance of all district vehicles and equipment while prioritizing safety, efficiency, and pleasing appearance.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education/Certification:
High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution. Texas School Bus Driver Certification preferred Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License - Class A or B CDL with P and S endorsements Ability to pass annual DOT physical examination and random drug testing Must maintain a satisfactory driving record State Bus Drivers certification course Diesel Mechanic Certification preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Mechanical aptitude Knowledge of fuel, electrical, hydraulic, oil pressure, and lubrication systems Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Able to perform mechanical repairs with no supervision Ability to work cooperatively with people and follow directions Strong work ethic and excellent attendance record
Minimum Experience:
Five [5] years of experience in automotive or related field Three [3] to five [5] years of experience as a diesel mechanic, preferred One to three [3] years of experience as a school bus mechanic, preferred One to three [3] years of experience in small engine repair
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB DUTIES
1. Operate and utilize materials and equipment used in the Transportation and Maintenance Departments. 2. Analyze and diagnose necessary repair work, including major and minor assemblies, engines, drive trains, components, and systems. 3. Perform repairs on automotive air-conditioning systems. 4. Perform major repairs on brake systems and change tires, including split-rims, as needed. 5. Assume responsibility for routine maintenance, safe operation, preventive care, and inventory of school district vehicles, tools, and equipment. 6. Respond to emergency vehicle repairs. 7. Assume driver responsibilities when substitute drivers are not available. 8. Ability to open the facility in the absence of the Shop Foreman or work late as needed. 9. Follow all safety rules and safety procedures. 10. Test drive vehicles on public streets. 11. Assume responsibility for personal daily time records. 12. Complete assigned Vehicle Repair Orders and maintain accurate records of all shop and maintenance-related work. 13. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible. 14. Attend required staff development as assigned by the Administration and Supervisor. 15. Follow all rules, regulations, and policies of the Irving Independent School District. 16. Perform other functions assigned by the Administration and Supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making. Frequent in-district and occasional in-state or national travel. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
Tools/Equipment Used:
Tools and equipment needed to perform the general repair of Transportation and Maintenance vehicles, including (but not limited to) power tools, hydraulic lifts, computers, tire changers, electronic analysis equipment, electrical test equipment, brake lathe, welding equipment, and engine hoist. School buses and all specialized equipment identified to accommodate special needs students
Posture:
Prolonged sitting and standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion:
Frequent walking; frequent use of hands and wrists
Lifting:
Heavy lifting and carrying (more than 50 pounds) Work with hand tools up to 10 lbs. in positions above and below the head.
Environment:
Requires performing tasks standing, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting, and lying on back with extended reaching in front of and above the body; Requires climbing and working on ladders and in pits; Requires heavy lifting and carrying while walking; Uses chemicals and cleaning solvents to maintain and repair equipment; Operates school district vehicle daily and must get in and out 10 to 20 times per shift; Works inside and outside; Frequent exposure to inclement weather, including heat, cold, rain, and snow; Frequent exposure to exhaust fumes, grease, oils, smoke and gases

Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidents immediately to the supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
